The Diminishment of the Department of Education. The Department of Education is a cabinet-level department founded by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Its goal was to close the gap between the lower performing students and the higher performing students. They’ve been very successful; now, everyone’s performing at a lower standard. The department today remains a stronghold for teachers’ unions, and if you’re paying just marginal attention it’s clear our children are suffering. I suspect you heard the president of a teachers union arguing very forcefully that the teachers unions should have more authority over the education of our children than parents do.

The awkward reality is that our education system must be reimagined. It isn’t working. Our schools are less safe and less effective. I’m not blaming any particular thing, but the way we’ve been doing it isn’t working, especially at the university level. Someone has to have the courage to say that it has failed—and I’ve spent my life advocating for education.
