Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. — Proverbs 16:3

Sometimes we act as if this verse says:

Make plans, get to work, and then ask God to establish them.

But the fatal flaw in this is the assumption is that we as men can make perfect plans that need just a sprinkle of blessing from the Lord. And honestly, this is a pretty arrogant assumption. I would highly recommend not doing this as God might teach you an unfortunate lesson.

And this is not what the proverb is teaching us. The first word of this proverb assumes the first action we do before making a plan is "committing." Because the man who first "commits" something he plans to work on to the Lord will know what God wants him to work on. He will discern the difference between God's will and something that's his will. And when he does, he will make adjustments to his will doing only God's work done his way. Thus this man's plan is adjusted to God's will and becomes God's plan. And while it may look like to the world this "man's plan is being established," it is actually God's plan that is being established in and through a man.

So if you want to spend less time wasting your time working on the wrong thing, spend a few minutes praying about the plans ahead of you today.
