The parable of the Prodigal Son is re-examined with the addition of some cultural understandings that the first century hearers would have known that we may not pick up on as easily.

Also, the most common application of this parable in the modern church is to see it as applicable to any repentant sinner coming to God, and the forgiveness he brings. However, that is not the intent or purpose of this story at all. By looking at the historical surroundings, the audience relevance, and the prophecies in Hosea and Ezekiel, the characters involved in this parable are more accurately identified to give a better understanding to what Jesus was saying in this story.
