1. Jesus is PRONOUNCED dead and removed from the cross.
Vs. 31-37
1) The DEMAND for His legs to be broken had to do with a special day.
Vs. 31
Here are the events of the week.
Thursday Jesus sends two of them to prepared for the Passover
meal. Thursday night they eat the Passover meal and His arrest
occurs that evening.

Friday then is the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That
means that the next day is a Sabbath also. Matthew 28:1
Therefore, Jesus died by 3:00pm in the afternoon, on Friday. He is in
the tomb then for a portion of Friday and on Saturday and part of
Sunday. Thus, the phrase, 3 days and 3 nights.
Matt 12:40-41
Est 4:15-16
We also need to understand the connection between the three Jewish feast
that are taking place.
Lev 23:4-8
The first Feast mentioned here is Passover.
The second Feast is Unleavened Bread.
The third Feast is First Fruits.
It concludes the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
It is always held on a Sunday.

2) He is DECLARED dead by a professional. (executioner)
Vs. 32

Mark 15:39
Blood and water flow from his side.
Medical experts tell us that Jesus literally died from a ruptured
heart, a broken heart.
This information invalidates the claim that somehow Jesus did not
really die on the cross.
3) The DETAILS of His death involved two prophecies.
Vs. 36
If Jesus were to be our Passover lamb then his bones could not be
broken.
Ex 12:46, Ps 34:20, Zech 12:10

2. Jesus body is PREPARED by two secret believers.
Vs.38-40
1) Burial PERMISSION was given to secret disciples.
Vs. 38
God had prepared two high-ranking men to prepare His body for
burial and to place it in a proper tomb.
John informs us that Joseph was a “secret disciple for fear of the
Jews.”
We have already met Nicodemus in our study of John in chapter 3.
2) The burial PROCESS was traditional but rushed.
Vs. 40
It seems evident that Joseph and Nicodemus carefully planned their
activities at Calvary.

3. Jesus body is PLACED in the garden tomb.
Vs. 41-42
1) The PLACE was in a garden.
Vs. 41b
No one had ever been buried there.
I think that John includes this information for a reason.

2) The PLACE was with the rich.
Isa 53:9
3) The PLACE was well known to the Roman officials.
Matt 27:62-66
They all know where the tomb is located. All they must do is go
there and produce the body and Christianity is over.
4. The PROOF of the empty tomb was enough for one disciple.
Vs. 3-9
1) John REACHES the tomb first but remains outside.
Vs.
Peter and John deserve credit for having the courage to run into enemy
territory, not knowing what lay before them.
They may have had vastly different motivations.
John stood at the cross and received instructions from the Lord.
His motivation was love.
Peter hides after denying the Lord.
His motivation may have been guilt.

2) John and Peter have different REACTIONS.
It is important to understand what they saw as they came in.
The Jews at death were wrapped in linen swaddling clothes
containing dry spices and were placed on their backs, without
coffins, in tombs.
What they saw caused John to believe.
When Peter came, he brushed John aside (v. 6), entered the tomb,
and “saw the strips of linen lying there.” The Greek word there is
theoreo, from which we get the English word theater or too theorize.
Vs. 8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in
also; and he saw and believed.
John saw and he knew.
It is the idea of the light going on in our head.
eido (i'-do);
C. K. Barrett says,
“Here … it seems that the body in some way disappeared from or
passed through the cloths and left them lying as they were.”
John Stott says the body was “vaporized” as it became something
wonderful and new. 2

Rom 10:9-11

We are a non-denominational fellowship of believers in the God of the Bible, who simply seek to know and walk with Him in Spirit and in Truth. A distinctive of Calvary Chapel is that we place an emphasis on the Word of God, simply and yet diligently studying and teaching it book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Please join us at Calvary Chapel Windward as we worship God and study his word.
