What does God actually look for in a leader? In this message from 1 Kings 3:1-9, Pastor Robert walks through the opening of Solomon’s reign and uncovers three leadership realities that every pastor, parent, business leader, and follower of Christ must face — the seductive pull of compromise, the danger of incomplete devotion, and the transforming power of humble dependence on God.
Solomon begins his reign looking confident and in control — making political alliances, building his kingdom, offering sacrifices. But beneath the surface, small compromises are already taking root. By the end of this passage, that same powerful king is on his knees before God saying, “I am a little child.” That journey from self-reliance to surrender is what this message is all about.
In this sermon, Pastor Robert covers:
1. Why Solomon's marriage to Pharaoh's daughter was more than a political move — and what Egypt represents spiritually for every believer today
2. The danger of “high place” worship — doing the right things in the wrong way — and how it plants seeds of future spiritual failure
3. Why God does not wait for a perfect leader before He starts speaking (and the long list of imperfect people He has always chosen to work through)
4. How Solomon's prayer in verses 6-9 models exactly the kind of humility, gratitude, and God-dependence that transforms ordinary leaders into extraordinary ones
5. Why the people you lead belong to God — not to you — and how that changes everything about how you lead
6. The two things every leader desperately needs: an understanding heart and the ability to discern good from evil
This message is relevant for church leaders, pastors, ministry leaders, Christian entrepreneurs, parents, and anyone in a position of influence who wants to lead in a way that honors God. If you've ever felt unqualified, overwhelmed, or unsure whether God can still use you despite your mistakes — this sermon is for you.
We pray that you are blessed by the message!
