“Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” These verses explain the highly selective nature of the Fourth Gospel’s contents (“miraculous signs”), as well as its intent (“believing in Jesus”). John’s two-fold purpose is to persuade his readers of Jesus’ true identity as “the Christ, the Son of God” (apologetic) and to provide the reason for believing in Him, which is to receive the gift of eternal life (evangelistic). So the One you must keep believing in is Jesus, because in being God and Savior, He is your Life-giver. There are two ways people respond to Jesus.
