1. There was a CONSTANT reminder of sin.
Vs. 1-4
1) The REASON was that sacrifices failed to make anyone perfect.
Vs. 1b -2
Ps 51:15-17, 1 Sam 15:22, Isa 1:11-13
The very nature of the Old Covenant sacrifices made them inferior.
They were only a shadow.
They were, not the very image of the things
2) The REPEATED sacrifices were a reminder that sin was not forgiven.
Vs. 2b-3
Because the old system could not take away their sin, it produced a second
imperfection—a guilty conscience (cf. v. 2). This meant that the system
was temporary, and therefore could accomplish nothing permanent.
Lev 4:20-21
Gen 6:14-15
We remember PAST sins.
They can bring condemnation.
They can bring feeling of guilt and shame.
What should we do?
Paul says it is a matter of spiritual warfare.
2 Cor 10:3-6
How do we bring these feelings of guilt into captivity?
By remembering our study of the New Covenant.
By remembering the ONE-TIME sacrifice for our sins.
By remember the power of the blood of Jesus.
IT IS BY REMEMBERING THE TRUTH
We Remember Present Sins.
1 John 1:9-10
2. Christ death COMPLETELY fulfilled the Father’s will.
(cf. Ps 40:6-8)
Vs. 5-10
1) The CONTRAST of the sacrifice.
The PURPOSE of His coming.
Notice the sacrifice of Jesus voluntary.
Later, in 12:2, the writer tells us that Jesus endured the cross
“for the joy set before him.”
The sacrifice of Jesus was in fulfillment of scripture.
Christ’s words here were a quotation from King David taken from a
paraphrased Greek version of Psalm 40:6–8 (LXX, Psalm 39:7–9).
Here the writer, Paul, correctly translates a Jewish idiom.
Because my ears are open to you and therefore I will obey what you
say.
The point is submission. This idea is seen again in vs. 7
The POINT that is being made about the sacrificial system.
Vs. 6
Each of these offerings typified the sacrifice of Christ and revealed
some aspect of His work on the cross (see Lev. 1–7).
Twice in this paragraph, the writer stated that God
“had no pleasure” in the Old Covenant sacrifices (see Heb. 10:6, 8).
God had established them as object lessons to instruct his people
about the
sinfulness of their hearts,
his hatred of sin,
the fact that sin leads to death,
the need of an atonement
No amount of sacrifices could substitute for obedience (1 Sam.
15:22, Ps. 51:16–17; Isa. 1:11, 19; Jer. 6:19–20; Hosea 6:6; Amos
5:20–21).
Mark 7:6-7
2) The COMPLETENESS of His sacrifice.
Vs. 10
Believers have been set apart (“sanctified”) by the offering of Christ’s body
once for all.
No Old Covenant sacrifice could do that.
This means that we have been permanently made holy in the sight of
God.
Paul in Colossians says, believers are “complete in Him” (Col. 2:10).
What is the application for us?
Jesus’ resolve to obediently do God’s will is the essence of the true
sacrifice and worship that God desires.
What he wanted and still wants is obedience!
That is the only sacrifice that is acceptable to God.
3. The final CONCLUSION in regard to the New Covenant.
Vs. 11-18
1) We are PERFECTED forever.
Vs. 11
And his work is done until He returns to establish His kingdom.
Here Paul making reference to Psalm 1
Vs. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being
sanctified.
Jesus’ sacrifice “once for all” is emphatic.
The writer wants us to see that its results are final.
Our salvation is a completed thing—a “done deal.”
In Christ we are perfected, but in this world, we are in process.
Paul describes the war within in Romans chapter 6.
And then he gives us the solution in Galatians chapter 5.
Galatians 5:17
When we live by the means of the Spirit we will live contrary and in conflict
with the sinful nature.
2) This PERFECTION is based on the New Covenant.
Vs. 15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us
And that witness is of two things.
God REMEMBERS no more.
Vs. 17b & quot; Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no
more.& quot;
There is REMISSION of sins.
We are a non-denominational fellowship of believers in the God of the Bible, who simply seek to know and walk with Him in Spirit and in Truth. A distinctive of Calvary Chapel is that we place an emphasis on the Word of God, simply and yet diligently studying and teaching it book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Please join us at Calvary Chapel Windward as we worship God and study his word.
