1. There are PROFOUND differences in the New Covenant.
Vs.7-13
1) The first PROFOUND difference is based on God’s faithfulness.
Vs. 8b
A covenant is a type of will. The person writing it determines everything.
The Old Covenant under the law was based on man’s ability to keep the
law. Thus, two parties were involved.
The New Covenant would be different.
It is based only on God’s faithfulness.

2) The second PROFOUND difference is in a radically different content.
Vs. 8b
God led Israel out of Egypt the way a father would take a child by the hand
and lead him. God gave Israel His holy Law for their own good, to separate
them from the other nations and to protect them from the sinful practices
of the heathen.
3) The third PROFOUND distinction is that the covenant is made with Israel, not
with gentiles.
Vs. 8b with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah —
Hebrews 8:11 quotes Jeremiah 31:34.
It refers to that day when Israel shall be reunited with Judah (Heb. 8:8) and
shall rejoice in the promised kingdom (Jer. 31:1–14).
“Salvation is from the Jews,” Jesus said (John 4:22).
Gal 3:6-9

4) The fourth PROFOUND difference is that it is internal and not external.
Vs. 10b
The Law of Moses could declare God’s holy standard, but it could never provide
the power needed for obedience.
Ps 119:9-11
A young man could hide the word of the law in his heart all he
wanted, but it had no power to prevent him from sinning.
2 Cor 5:17-18

5) The fifth PROFOUND difference is it is Personnel
Vs. 10b and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
John 17:3

6) The sixth PROFOUND difference is that it provides total forgiveness.
Vs. 12
Sin could be atoned for but never removed.

So, what does it mean that God remembers our sins and iniquities no more? (Heb.
8:12)
This important statement is quoted again in Hebrews 10:16–17.
Does it mean that our all-knowing God can actually forget what we have
done? The phrase “remember no more” means “hold against us no more.”

7) The seventh PROFOUND difference is that it provides the promises of God’s
protection for His people, Israel.
Jer 31:35-36

2. The PLACE of the earthly worship was a model of what was to come.
Vs.1-5
1) The previous PLACE of Worship was man made.
Vs. 1
The Jewish people generously brought their gifts to Moses, and from these
materials the tabernacle was constructed.
2) The previous PLACE of Worship was a type of something greater Vs. 2–5
They were “patterns of things in the heavens” (Heb. 9:23).
In the holy place stood the seven-branched golden candlestick (Ex.
25:31–40; 27:20–21; 37:17–24).
Jesus Christ is the “Light of the world” (John 8:12), and believers are to
shine as lights in the world (Phil. 2:14–15).
The table of showbread (Ex. 25:23–30; 37:10–16; Lev. 24:5–9).
John 6:32-36

The golden censer
The word translated “censer” (a device for burning incense) (Heb. 9:4)
should be “altar.” Ps 141:2
The holy of holies contained only the ark of the covenant, a wooden
chest. On the top of this chest was a beautiful “mercy seat” made of
gold, with a cherub at each end.
The most important truth is this: all of this was symbolism and not the spiritual
reality.

3. The PERFORMANCE of the priestly duties were limited.
Vs.6-10
1) The PERFORMANCE of the high priest was personal and national.
Only the high priest entered the holy of holies, and that only once a year.
2) The PERFORMANCE of the Priest was imperfect and temporary. The sacrifices
offered and the blood applied to the mercy seat could never change the heart or
the conscience of a worshiper. Numbers 15:30, 31
