My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off. — Proverbs 24:13-14
I love this one because the author adds a sense of taste which adds a tangible lesson to this proverb. The command is for his son to eat honey. And as we know, honey is potent with sugar. And sugar fires the taste receptor cells on the tip of the tongue, delivering a sugar high. And it is so potent that instant energy is delivered directly to our bodies. We instantly feel this energy because sugar burns quickly in the human body.
But there is a reason he wants his son to eat honey. It's not just to get a sugar high. But the father is hoping that as he eats honey, he will be reminded of how wisdom works. Because wisdom works similarly. It delivers potent energy directly to the soul. Wisdom is an "eye-opening" experience. And sometimes so "eye-opening" that it allows a man to see into the future and therefore see his hope in times of hopelessness.
So the application is this. When you feel hopeless, get a little honey. Eat it and be reminded that wisdom works the same way. It's sweetness for the soul that opens your eyes to the future and delivers the energy to hope again.
ASK THIS: Do you need hope today?
DO THIS: Get wisdom.
PRAY THIS: God, today I need hope. I am asking you for wisdom. I am ready to receive it regardless of how you present it. Help me pay attention today when it comes, and give me hope.
