Jesus taught Nicodemus about the Kingdom of God and how to enter into the kingdom. Follow me to John 3:3-7 READ PLEASE ????
The book of Acts provides a detailed, orderly, eyewitness account of the New Birth of the Church through water and spirit. The book of Acts begins with the ascension of Christ between 30–33 AD and runs all the way through to 62–64 AD. The Book of Acts has over over 30 years of church history.
Acts reveals the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Acts is about the church's birth. Acts' story really begins with baptism and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost resulted in 3000 souls baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost speaking with other tongues. The church is planted in Jerusalem, the believers are spiritually empowered with the power of the Holy Ghost, and the gospel spread into "Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" Acts 1:8 i9
This brings us to our today’s lesson.
PAUL'S ARRIVAL IN EPHESUS. He had just started his third journey. Acts 18:22-23. At the end of his second journey, he had made a quick stop at Ephesus. Acts 18:19-21.
PAUL MEETS TWELVE DISCIPLES.
He finds some "disciples", twelve in number. Acts 19:1,7. He learns they were disciples of John the Baptist. Acts 19:2-3. He asked them if they had received the Holy Ghost when they believed. Assuming the "disciples" to have been baptized into Christ. Their answer sparks another question from Paul. They had not heard about a "Holy Ghost". So Paul asks them about their baptism. He learns that it was John's baptism.
THE TWELVE ARE "RE-BAPTIZED"
The Bible records that The twelve disciples of John believed Paul was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 19:5 This would be the baptism commanded by Jesus. The first-century church was all baptized in the name of Jesus beginning on the Day of Pentecost even until today!
IS "RE-BAPTISM" EVER NECESSARY?
Yes, in Acts as for today as well. 19:5. There is only one baptism. Ephesians 4:5 makes that clear, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism, ”. In Acts 19:1-5, Jesus' name was missing in their previous baptism. And where John leaves the scene and Jesus comes call men everywhere to repent, turn from their sinful ways and follow him.
Here are cases where "re-baptism" would seem appropriate.
• Baptized by sprinkling or pouring (for the proper mode is immersion)
• Baptized by the authority of anyone other than Jesus (for the proper authority is Jesus Christ)
• Baptized as a public confession faith, thinking that this saves you (for the proper purpose is the remission of sins)
• Baptized but were not penitent believers (for a proper subject is one who believes "with all their heart")
• Baptized just because their friends are doing it, or spouse or parents want you to get baptized. It was not your decision.
• Baptized because their spouse, fiancé, or parents are pressuring them to do it and they do it to please them, not God.
Once you have been clothed with Christ through baptism: Galatians 3:27. The blood of Christ continually cleanses us of our sins. As we repent and confess our sins to God in prayer. Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9
CONCLUSION
The example of "The Twelve Disciples of John" is outdated and we certainly can illustrate that one can be religious and not be properly baptized.
• The right mode. immersion
• The ONLY NAME: Jesus Christ because there is according to Ephesians 4:5, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism,”
• The right purpose. remission of sins
• The right candidate: penitent sinner that earnestly wants to believer.
If you have come to that point in yourself and desire Jesus to never hold your sins against you and to be ready when he comes back, then place your faith in JESUS and allow Him to become your Savior and God! Then you should be baptized in His name for Jesus and if your heart is sincere, you will be filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost. Read: Acts 2:38-41; 10:44; 8:12-19; 19:1-5
