Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: "To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man." — Proverbs 8:1-4

Solomon has introduced us to a personification of wisdom throughout Proverbs called Lady Wisdom. She is the one who has been around from the beginning of time. In this text, Solomon imagines her calling out to the people of the earth. She is standing before God's holy city, imploring us to come in, calling and crying out to all mankind.

The point? She (wisdom) lives. She is available. She implores and invites us in.

But you have to see that the persuading of Lady Wisdom is in direct opposition to the persuasion of the Adulteress in the last chapter. If you missed it, go back and read the previous chapter. The Adultress is another personification who calls out to all mankind in the street.

The point? She (the Adulteress) lives. She is available. She implores and invites us in.

They both are doing the same thing but calling us to two different ends — one of temporary value and the other endless value.

So what we have here is not one voice but two. Both are beckoning us. Both are speaking. And we get to listen, choose, and follow. The question is, which lady will you follow today?

ASK THIS: In the choices you make today, which lady will you listen to?

DO THIS: Listen to lady wisdom.

PRAY THIS: God, help me know the difference between these two voices. And give me enough wisdom to make the right choice.
