0. INTRODUCTION TO 1-2 CHRONICLES
The books of 1 & 2 Chronicles were likely written by Ezra the priest, after the return of the Jews from Babylonian captivity (ca. 430 BC). The question addressed and answered in these books to the Israelites just out of exile is, "Is God still interested in his people?" Jerome (AD 347-420), who wrote the Latin Vulgate translation, called these books a "chronicle of the whole sacred history." The title "Chronicles" has since remained. They cover Israel's monarchy from beginning to end. It is the same period of history covered by the books of 2 Samuel and Kings. The books focus on the history of the southern kingdom, Judah. They mention Israel only when Israel's history touches Judah's. The Jews were struggling to begin a new life after 70 years of Babylonian exile. Much attention is given to the monarchy and to the temple-King David's preparations for building, furnishing and worshiping in it, and King Solomon's building it. King David and King Solomon are presented as ideal kings. 1 Chronicles 1-9 are genealogies, with an emphasis on the genealogies of Judah (David's tribe) and Levi (the priestly tribe). The ideal character of 1 Chronicles is David, the model king and shepherd of his people. God our Shepherd called David and trained him to be the shepherd of his people. In 2 Chronicles the Levites rather than the kings are the key characters. They were the caretakers of the temple and the Bible teachers of the nation. The restoration of the temple was a miracle. It reminded the returned exiles that God still loved them and had a purpose for them. The key to national restoration, however, was the Bible. They must study it and put it into practice. This is also our key to national and personal restoration. 0. HOW WILL YOU BE REMEMBERED BY FUTURE GENERATIONS?
1. Adam to Abraham (1:1-54)
The 8 chapters of genealogy focus on David (the kingship) and Levi (the priesthood). Adam was the first man, created by God. God elected blameless, righteous Noah and his 3 sons to save them through the ark and to repopulate the earth. Japheth's descendants moved north, Ham's moved south, and Shem's moved east. Through Shem came Abraham, the father of the Israelites, and our father in the faith (Ro 4:16).
2. Israel to David (2:1-55)
Israel (Jacob) had 12 sons, who formed the 12 tribes of Israel. Judah is highlighted, since this is King David's line (15). Note 3 people: Er (3), Achar (7) and Bezalel (20). Er was wicked in the Lord's sight; so the Lord put him to death. Achar (a.k.a. Achan) brought trouble on Israel by violating the ban on devoted things (Jos 7:1,25); he was stoned to death. Bezalel was a skilled craftsman during the time of the tabernacle construction. He used his skill, talent and time to serve the Lord.
Prayer: Lord, I won't live forever here. May my life bring you praise, honor and glory. In Jesus' name.
One Word: Leave a legacy of faith and love for God
