Study Notes
1. The COMBINED armies of the north gather to fight.
Vs. 1-5
1) It was COMMUNICATION from the south that brought about these events.
Josh 2:10-11, Josh 5:1, Josh 6:27
2) They gathered as a new CONFEDERATION of Kings
Vs. 1
The PEOPLE of the confederation.
Jabin is a dynasty name much like Pharaoh or Caesar.
The PLACES of the confederation.
Vs. 2
The POPULATION of the armies.
Vs. 4
Hazor was clearly an important city with great clout in the area, and
its readiness for war seems to have been parallel to that of the Egyptians forty years earlier.
Vs. 4b with very many horses and chariots.
This was a huge advantage militarily.
Ps 33:16-17
3) The CAPITAL of their nation was involved.
Vs. 1
Vs. 10
Hazor is their capital, and it was an extensive city as the archeological site tells us today. The entire site of the old city is 175 acres. There was a highway, the Via Maris, that ran through Megiddo to Hazor.
It connected Egypt to Babylon.
2. The COMPELLING encouragement and instructions for Joshua.
Vs. 6-9

Vs. 6b
Joshua 1:9
2) The DESTRUCTION of horses and chariots.
The initial battle will be done and finished in a day, and the military capability of the opposition will be neutralized. Deut 17:15-17
3) The actual DEFEAT at the waters of Merom.
Vs. 7-9
In this case we don’t know about any directly visible divine intervention to bring victory to Israel.
3. The COMPLETE destruction of the kings of the north.
Vs. 10-15
1) The COMMAND of Moses to destroy the cities and people was obeyed.
The POSITION of the city.
He begins with Hazor, the most powerful city of the area and it is burned to the ground. (vv. 10, 11). Located in Upper Galilee, Hazor is the largest archaeological site in northern Israel.
The PUNISHMENT of the city.
The punishment is a judgement of God.
Deut 9:5, Deut 20:10-11
We know from the dig at Hazor that it was burned with fire three times.
2) The CITIES that were spared.
Vs. 13
3) The spoils of the victory were CARRIED off by Israel.
Vs. 14
Once again the text emphasizes Joshua’s detailed obedience to all that God had commanded Moses and was written in the book of the Law (v. 12).
4. Joshua's CONQUESTS are summarized.
Vs. 16-23
1) The PLACES that were defeated.
Vs. 18
2) The Lord had PREVAILED upon the people to harden their hearts.
Vs. 20
Just as in the generation before He had hardened Pharaoh’s heart to resist the exodus in spite of and perhaps because of the plagues.
Ex 4:21, Ex 7:3-4
3) There were PARTICULAR people who needed to be defeated.
The Anakim were giants in the land.
Josh 14:10-12
4) The PEACE that was brought to the land.
Vs. 23b Then the land rested from war.
For the moment there is “rest from war,” but there will be much more land to be possessed and a greater rest for the people of God to enjoy in the future.
5. The COUNTERPART of Rest in the New Testament.

The RESPONSE that is dangerous.
Vs. 1b let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT JESUS AS THE MESSIAH IF CRITICAL TO ENTERING GOD’S REST.
2) The PROCLAMATION of good news has been announced.
Vs. 2
3) We must POSSESS faith to enter God’s rest.
Vs. 3
Like Joshua, our faith should lead to obedience.
