And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. — Acts 1:13-14

What a moment and what a group of people. Mary, the mother of Jesus. A few immediate family members. Some close friends. And all of the disciples minus one. This is a very humble group of people. A group by which God would launch a worldwide movement.

But notice where they were — in the upper room. The same upper room where Jesus gave his last instructions to the disciples in John chapters 13-17. Do you remember what happened in this room? It was here that Jesus washed the disciple's feet and ate his last meal. Here Jesus foretold the betrayal of Judas and the denial of Peter. Here Thomas was confused about what Jesus was doing and where he was going to go. Here Phillip demanded to see God, even though the Son of God sat before him. In this room, Jesus spoke about the coming of the Holy Spirit, which was probably a strange idea to them. In this room, Jesus commanded them to love one another. In this room, Jesus told them the world would hate them. In this room, Jesus told them joy is coming and that he would overcome the world. And in this room, Jesus prayed for all of them, his final prayer.

Don't you wonder if they sat there, in the Upper Room, and processed all the teachings and happenings of Jesus' life? I wonder if they discussed how ignorant they were? And then, as they shared individual interactions, they saw how divine Jesus really was. This is definitely a moment I was to see played back when I get to heaven.

But we can have upper room experiences in our time. Jesus is not dead. He is alive. The Holy Spirit is still moving, and God is still doing great things. In fact, right now, somewhere on planet earth, humble groups just like this are meeting together. They are telling stories of what Jesus did and what Jesus has done in their lives. God lives on, and we must testify of his work and greatness in our lives.

If you don't have a community like this in your life — then you need one. You need upper room people in your life—a humble group of people to do the Christian life with. If you don't have one, find one today.
