STUDY NOTES :
REVELATION CHAPTER 12: In the midst of revealing to the Apostle John what the future will hold, God brings a pause and takes John into the past for a History Lesson, before continuing on with future events to occur.
Verse 1… A woman with twelve stars represents the nation of Israel.
Genesis 37:9-10
Verse 2… A history lesson on the first coming of Christ and of His birth on earth.
Micah 4:8-10 …. Micah 5:1-3
Verses 3-5… These Scriptures give a history account of the devil and his plans to fight against God and His people. Described as the dragon with seven heads. The devil is given at least 7 titles or subtitles in this chapter alone. For example:
The great red dragon = GREAT – because of his vast power (Matthew 4:8-9); RED – because he was the first murderer (John 8:44); DRAGON – because of his viciousness (2nd Corinthians 6:15). And having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns (Daniel 7:7-8).
The third part of the stars are cast to earth… Daniel 8:10
The dragon stood, ready to devour Israel’s “child”…Matthew 2:1-16 Describing the man child (JESUS):
Revelation 2:27 …. Revelation 19:11-16.
Describing his incarnation: Galatians 4:4-5.
Describing his ascension: 1st Corinthians 15:4 …. Acts 1:6-11. Describing His future reign: Psalms 2:6-9 …. Revelation 20:1-6
Verse 6… The Lord takes John back briefly to the future during the tribulation period where Israel flees into the wilderness for 3 ½ years.
Revelation 12:14 …. Matthew 24:15-20 …. Isaiah 64:8-10 …. Revelation 11:2-3.
Verse 7… The Lord describes a war in Heaven.
Daniel 10:13 …. Isaiah 26:20-21 …. Isaiah 27:1)
Verse 8-9… The Lord tells John how the devil and his angels are cast out of heaven.
Luke 10:18 …. Ephesians 2:2 …. John 12:31
The enemy (satan) is described as the “Adversary” 1st Peter 5:8; and satan is described as the deceiver of the whole world as he not only deceives men, but angels as well. Revelation 12:4…. Isaiah 14:12-15 …. Ezekiel 28:11-19. The enemy satan is described as the devil (one who slanders) Job 1:8-9…. Zechariah 3:1-7 The devil is also described as “The Old Serpent = “old” which takes us back to the garden of Eden in Genesis 3, and “serpent” which reminds us of the first body the devil used in deceiving Eve and causing Adam to sin.
