STUDY NOTES :

REVELATION CHAPTER 17:  This chapter centers in on the destruction of the world’s religious systems, and the ultimate victory of the Lamb of God!
·       Verses 1-6… This is the history of the RELIGIOUS HARLOT.
#1.  This religious system (called a harlot) is drunk with the blood of the saints!
#2.  This religious system is covered with the filth of HELL!
#3.  This religious system is decked out with the wealth of the world!
Note: see Revelation 14:8…. Jeremiah 51:1-13 …. Daniel 7:7-8
 
·       Verses 7-18… These verses of Scripture describe the future of this corrupt religious system. It is interesting to note that the false religions of this world first team up with the anti-Christ, and is then later destroyed by the same anti-Christ she supported.
 John 8:43-47 …. Galatians 1:8-9 
·       The Scriptures clearly identify false religious systems: 
2nd Timothy 3:1-5…. Titus 1:13-16 …. 2nd Timothy 4:3-4 …. 2nd Peter 2:1 …. Revelation 3:15-17
·                NOTE ON VERSE 16:  “The scarlet animal and his ten horns (which represent ten kings who will reign with the anti-Christ) hate the woman (the false religions).  They will attack her and leave her naked and ravaged by fire!  Some scholars point out that the possible reason for all this is that after the harlot has put the anti-Christ in power, she then attempts to control him. 
·                History gives us examples of religious systems attempting to control kinds and rulers. 
EXAMPLE: In the 11th Century, Pope Gregory VII laid down this edict: “It is laid down that the Roman Pontiff is the Universal Bishop that his name is the only one of its kind in the world.  To him ALONE it belongs to dispose or reconcile bishops.  He alone may use the ensigns of empire; all princes are bound to kiss his feet; he has the right to depose emperors, and to absolve subjects from their allegiance.  He holds in his hands the supreme mediation in questions of war and peace, and he alone may adjudge contested succession to kingdoms.  All kingdoms are held in fiefs under Peter, the Roman church has never erred, and the Pope is above all judgment! Summary of Revelation Chapter 17:  This chapter shows us that false religion ultimately leads to corruption and destruction!
