(Week #11) People of the Book (Deut. 6:4-25)
I. We are to know the Book (v. 4-9)
A. We are to hear and obey God. (v.4-5)
B. We are to develop a biblical worldview. [cf., 1 Pet. 3:15]. (v.6-9)
a. Worldview- a network of core beliefs about the nature of reality (metaphysics), knowledge (epistemology) and ethics (axiology). These beliefs are not empirically verified (see, taste, touch, hear, smell) but are those fundamental beliefs by which we seek to prove everything else through interpretation, evaluation, and application.
II. We are to live the Book (v.10-19)
A. By not forgetting God in the good times [cf., 2 Sam. 11:1-4](v.10-15)
B. By not complaining about God’s provision [cf., Phil. 2:14] (v.16-19)
III. We are to teach the Book (v.20-25)
A. We are responsible to teach the Bible to our children.
a. The Law and the Mosaic Covenant
1. It demonstrates God’s redemption and grace (v.21)
2. It demonstrates God’s power in the world (v.22)
3. It demonstrates God’s covenant faithfulness [cf., Gen. 17:7-8] (v.23)
4. It demonstrates God’s standard to experience temporal & spiritual blessings (v.24-25)
b. Worldview Basics
1. God- Who is God and how can we know Him?
2. Origin- What is man’s origin?
3. Meaning- What is the meaning and purpose of life?
4. Morality- What is right and wrong?
5. Destiny- What is man’s ultimate destiny?
Points to Ponder:
1. The Christian’s highest duties are to Love God and keep His Word. (John 14:23)
2. We are to continually develop a biblical life and worldview and teach it to others. (Rom. 12:2)
