We are often shocked by what we learn about ourselves in times of failure, but we can be assured that God is not shocked at all. During the last supper, Jesus reveals to Peter that his bravery and loyalty to Jesus will not last even until the next sunrise. But Jesus' word to Peter seems to be intended to encourage rather than condemn. In Peter's case and in ours, God already knows the weakness and darkness in our souls, and loves us regardless. God's faithfulness to us can thus give us the courage to be honest about what God already sees and we have yet to discover about ourselves.
