INTRODUCTION

Here in Acts 8, they are talking about old testament scriptures that result in a baptism. Let's look a little closer, we read of the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch who on his return from the synagogue in Jerusalem was met by Philip the evangelist.

Philip started with the scriptures the eunuch heard at the synagogue but did not understand. After explaining to the eunuch the scriptures were talking about Jesus. He immediately wanted to get baptized in the name of Jesus. Earlier in the book of Acts 3,000 in Acts 2:41, and then 5,000 in Acts 4:4 souls were saved through their faith in Jesus followed by baptism in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues.

Acts 8:26-29. The Ethiopian invited Philip to explain a passage from the book of Isaiah. Acts 8:30-34. Beginning with the passage Isaiah 53:7-8, note that Philip preached Jesus to him. Acts 8:35

We can learn what it means to preach Jesus from what is written regarding the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch! Now, what we can glean from what the Ethiopian eunuch came to understand Isaiah 53:7-8?

I. ISAIAH'S QUOTATION

JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS

Isaiah 53:4 is saying, then, is that Christ voluntarily submitted Himself to this affliction.

Isaiah 53:4-6,10-11. Jesus' suffering and dying for our sins is the FOUNDATION OF THE GOSPEL!

JESUS HAS BEEN EXALTED

Isaiah's prophecy begins and ends with the exaltation of the Messiah. Isaiah 52:13; 53:12, Acts 2:36; 5:30-31 From Isaiah's quotation, we learn that preaching Jesus includes preaching how Jesus died for our sins, and has been exalted to the right hand of God!

II. THE EUNUCH'S QUESTION

THE IMPORTANCE OF BAPTISM

Notice the first question asked by the eunuch. Acts 8:36 "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" Preaching Jesus clearly included preaching on baptism! Philip like Peter on the Day of Pentecost expounds on the water and spirit all in the name of THE ONE THAT IS HIGHLY EXALTED TO THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD WHICH IS JESUS CHRIST THE ONE THAT DIED ON THE CROSS FOR OUR SINS! Baptism is important to Jesus and His apostles Jesus commanded it in giving the great commission. Matthew 28: 19-20; Mark 16:15-16 The apostles commanded it in their preaching. Acts 2:38; 10: 47-48 The apostles also wrote of its value in their epistles. Romans 6:3-4; 1 Peter 3:21 Preaching Jesus, therefore, includes preaching baptism!

THE IMMEDIACY OF BAPTISM

The Ethiopian was anxious to obey; Philip was willing to accommodate him. Acts 8:38.

III. THE NECESSITY OF FAITH

Indeed, faith is necessary for salvation. John 8:24 Through faith we can have life in His name. John 20:30-31 Baptism is a working of God when our faith is present. Colossians 2:12 Preaching Jesus, therefore, demands faith in Jesus before baptism!

THE NECESSITY OF HEARTINESS

Philip required a wholehearted faith. Acts 8:37 "If you believe with all your heart, you may" Baptism without such faith renders one getting simply wet!

PREACHING JESUS MEANS PREACHING THE BLOOD STAIN GOSPEL. THE PASSION OF CHRIST AND HIS SHED BLOOD FOR OUR SALVATION. MATTHEW 26:28, ROMANS 3:25.

A SINNER MUST BELIEVE IN JESUS AND HIS GOSPEL. I CORINTHIANS 15:1-4

READ Luke 24:47. THIS IS THE GOOD NEWS HOW TO BE FORGIVEN FOR OUR SIN.

This justification by the blood of Christ is another reminder that we are justified “through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus” Romans 3:24. We can be “reconciled to God through the death of His Son” Romans 5:10.

How do we gain access to the blood of Christ? This is an important question to answer if we want to be “justified by His blood” Romans 5:9. The cleansing blood of Jesus is the blood which He shed in His death on the cross Colossians 1:20. We contact that blood when we are “baptized into Christ Jesus” because we are being “baptized into His death” Romans 6:3. When we do this, we are washed, sanctified, and justified 1 Corinthians 6:11.

PROPITIATION IS THE ACT OF APPEASING GOD’S WRATH. Jesus’ BLOOD APPEASED the GOD’S WRATH. HE IS OUR substitute on the cross. READ: Romans 3:25. READ: Hebrews 9:22. You cannot have your sins forgiven by Jesus with Him remitting them through His BLOOD!

Paul sends a warning in Acts 20:28-31

CONCLUSION

Today, many do not preach Jesus as Philip and the apostles did. They ignore baptism altogether or render it insignificant.

Has Jesus truly been preached to you, as Philip preached Jesus to the Eunuch? Acts 2:36-38; 22:16
