Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, but his mother answered, "No; he shall be called John." And they said to her, "None of your relatives is called by this name." And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And they all wondered. And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. — Luke 1:57-64

This had to be a spectacular moment. As soon as Zechariah's pen completes the declaration of his son's name, his muteness of unbelief is ended, and the first thing he does with his reclaimed speech is praise his belief in the Lord.

Wouldn't our world be different if no one could speak unless they spoke a blessing? Think about it. When was the last time someone spoke a blessing to you? When was the last time someone looked in your eyes and said something thoughtful and meaningful about the blessing you are to them? Has it been a while? Probably. Maybe because we don't do it enough.

But if this is rare, could it be rarer that we bless and praise God for the things he does in our life? Maybe?

Take time today to bless someone. Look into the eyes of your spouse, children, or friend and give them a blessing. Don't worry about a card or gift. Just tell them how they have blessed you. Start with something like, "Tom, you have blessed me by... (and then complete the sentence). If you can't do this in person, then call them or text them a few words about the blessing they are to you. And when your day comes to a close, take time to bless and praise the one who deserves all our praise — the Lord. Tell him about all the wonderful things he has done for you.

ASK THIS: Who is someone who has blessed you.

DO THIS: Give them a blessing. Then praise the Lord.

PRAY THIS: God, thank you for how you have blessed me.
