Isaiah 61:1-4 The beginning of the year is the perfect time to dream, plan, and commit to important life changes.

Today's reading is an important passage from the Hebrew Bible, in part because Jesus made it his mission statement. On a visit to his hometown early in his ministry he read the passage, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because God has anointed me to bring good news to the poor… to bind up the brokenhearted.

God has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” After reading, Jesus said, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

If it was time for the Spirit empowered Jesus to do those things, then it continues to be time for the Spirit empowered followers of Jesus to do those things. Today continues to be the time for such life-giving work.
