The Most Avoided Messianic Psalm (4): Where Reproaches Fall (Psalm 69:9b) by Rev. Angus Stewart
I. When God Is Reproached
II. When We Are Reproached
Psalm singing: 142:1-7; 34:1-9; 119:129-136; 69:4-9 (see below for the words to the Psalms)
Scripture: Romans 14:10-15:7
Psalm 142:1-7
1 I WITH my voice cry’d to the Lord,
with it made my request:
2 Pour’d out to him my plaint, to him
my trouble I exprest.
3 When in me was o’erwhelm’d my sp’rit,
then well thou knew’st my way;
Where I did walk a snare for me
they privily did lay.
4 I look’d on my right hand, and view’d,
but none to know me were ;
All refuge failed me, no man
did for my soul take care.
5 I cry’d to thee; I said, Thou art
my refuge, Lord, alone ;
And in the land of those that live
thou art my portion.
6 Because I am brought very low,
attend unto my cry:
Me from my persecutors save,
who stronger are than I.
7 From prison bring my soul, that I
thy name may glorify:
The just shall compass me, when thou
with me deal’st bounteously.
Psalm 34:1-9
1 GOD will I bless all times; his praise
my mouth shall still express.
2 My soul shall boast in God : the meek
shall hear with joyfulness.
3 Extol the Lord with me, let us
exalt his name together.
4 I sought the Lord, he heard, and did
me from all fears deliver.
5 They look’d to him, and lighten’d were
not shamed were their faces.
6 This poor man cry’d, God heard, and saved
him from all his distresses.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps,
and round encompasseth
All those about that do him fear,
and them delivereth.
8 O taste and see that God is good ;
who trusts in him is bless’d.
9 Fear God his saints: none that him fear
shall be with want oppress’d.
Psalm 119:129-136
129 Thy statutes, Lord, are wonderful,
my soul them keeps with care.
130 The entrance of thy words gives light,
makes wise who simple are.
131 My mouth I have wide opened,
and panted earnestly,
While after thy commandements
I long’d exceedingly.
132 Look on me, Lord, and merciful
do thou unto me prove,
As thou art wont to do to those
thy name who truly love.
133 0 let my footsteps in thy word
aright still order’d be:
Let no iniquity obtain
dominion over me.
134 From man’s oppression save thou me;
so keep thy laws I will.
135 Thy face make on thy servant shine;
teach me thy statutes still.
136 Rivers of waters from mine eyes
did run down, when I saw
How wicked men run on in sin,
and do not keep thy law.
Psalm 69:4-9
4 Those men that do without a cause
bear hatred unto me,
Than are the hairs upon my head
in number more they be:
They that would me destroy, and are
mine en’mies wrongfully,
Are mighty: so what I took not,
to render forc’d was I.
5 Lord, thou my folly know’st, my sins
not cover’d are from thee.
6 Let none that wait on thee be sham’d,
Lord God of hosts, for me.
0 Lord, the God of Israel,
let none, who search do make,
And seek thee, be at any time
confounded for my sake.
7 For I have borne reproach for thee,
my face is hid with shame.
8 To brethren strange, to mother’s sous
an alien I became.
9 Because the zeal did eat me up,
which to thine house I bear;
And the reproaches cast at thee
upon me fallen are.
