Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high,
Psalm 113:4-9
4 The Lord is exalted over all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
5 Who is like the Lord our God,
the One who sits enthroned on high,
6 who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?
7 He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
8 he seats them with princes,
with the princes of his people.
9 He settles the childless woman in her home
as a happy mother of children.
Today’s title is “Who Is Like Him?”
We encounter a lot of different personalities in our lifetime. Some of them are really good. Others are bad. Rarely do we meet exceptionally good people. Who were the most exceptional people that you have encountered in your life so far? What made them so exceptional? I also had met some people who were so exceptionally good? They were so loving and caring, unlike many others. At the same time, I also could see that there is a clear limit in every human love and care. I see such a limit in me more than anybody else. I am one of those people who try to be good to God and others. Still, I find myself rarely giving up the most essential comfort and prestige that I enjoy for God and people. I rarely find myself volunteering to suffer for the good of God and others. So I understand that other people who try to be good reveal the same weakness. That’s who we are. So are we giving up on our search for the perfect personality and settling with compromise? We might have to be if we didn’t know the Lord. The Lord shows the perfect personality that we all were looking for and aspire to become. And He is real. We encounter and experience the amazing grace with the person of Christ in everyday life. Today’s psalmist must have experienced such glory and love of the Lord. He says, “ Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people. I am sure that a lot of people who know the Lord would feel the same way. Yes, who is like the Lord indeed? We all share the feeling. As much as we know the undeniable shortcomings in us, we are so grateful that we have such a wonderful Lord In the midst of us. Because He is with us, we do not despair despite our inevitable shortcomings. We get greatly encouraged to be better as we look to His love and compassion and His cross. We praise and pray. “Who is like you our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? Make us more and more like you little by little. Amen! ”
