Why should we love others? The Bible says in Ephesians 5:1 that we should be imitators of God. And so Jesus gave himself up — or he laid himself down — for others.

It doesn’t mean that he gave up or that he laid on the ground. It meant that he denied himself. He did what was hard to do for the sake of others. Jesus didn’t want to suffer but he did for us. Jesus didn’t want to have himself be hurt and inflicted with pain but he did because that was good for us. He laid himself down as a sacrifice for us.

So when the Bible says walk in love, that means lay yourself down — sacrifice the things you want — for the sake of others. Just like God did for us.
