In this verse, Paul is talking about getting stirred up. He’s not talking about stirring up the gifts of the Spirit, but he’s talking about stirring up the gift of God: the Holy Spirit.

When you stir up the Holy Spirit something takes place. There’s another presence that overpowers you. There’s a grace that empowers you.

When you stir up the Holy Spirit it removes you from current situations and allows you to be wonderfully put into place of refuge as you go about life, work, visiting family and going into public places. It keeps you somewhat immune from all that is going on in our crazy world.

The key is – what stirs the Holy Spirit up in you? What songs really stir Him up in you? What people can you be around that will stir up the Spirit of God in you? Not every Christian can stir up the Spirit in you. Some people will even stir up the flesh, stir up trouble or stir up anger. What places can you go to that stir up the Holy Spirit in you? What activities can you engage in that stir Him up?

It’s very important that you understand and learn the sensitivity of the Spirit that lives inside of you. If you’re going to live with someone, cohabitate with them – learn what turns them on and what turn them off.

It’s the same thing with God. Learn what excites the Holy Spirit, and learn what grieves the Holy Spirit.

As you stir Him up, with the songs you’re singing, the people you’re around, the places you’re going, or the activites you’re involved in, you will learn your own path – or your “yellow brick road” – to keeping God stirred up on the inside of you full-time.

You’ll miss a lot of the death, the depression and the destruction going on all around you; and you become a walking burning bush for God.
