Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you — Acts 3:19-20

Repentance seems like such a heavy hard word. I get it. It means we accept our wrongs and turn to do right, never to do our wrongs again. But while this word and its action are heavy, repentance also lightens our load because repentance results in a blessing. It results in the blotting out of our sin.

The term "blotted out" is a vivid word picture that everyone in Peter's time would have understood. You see, messages were written on papyrus, and the ink they used didn’t soak into the papyrus but remained on the surface. With a wet cloth, you could literally wipe letters, words, and sentences away. So if you made a mistake in the middle of a message, you could blot out that error.

The transferable point is this. Jesus blots our errors — our sin. He wipes them away. As if they never existed. As if there was no record. And he does this for us because he knows for us to have a relationship with him, our sins must be blotted out. All we need to do to have our sins blotted out is acknowledge our sin and turn in obedience to him. And the blessing of the blot is ours forever. All your sin is wiped from his record by the righteous hand of Jesus Christ.
