Our sin is not like a speeding ticket. Sin is a declaration of war against God. But instead of God declaring war against us in response, Christmas is God’s declaration of war against sin. In this passage, God responds to a charge of being unfair. The response calls attention to at least three common misconceptions about God. 1. We think God only wants a payoff; 2. We think God owes goodness to us for our good behavior; 3. We think our sin is a speeding ticket when it’s first degree murder. God corrects these misconceptions in Isaiah 43 and declares that he himself will do what none of us could ever do: Take sins away.

Philippians 2:7-8: "Truly God, Humble Servant" by Joshua Wallnofer

Our Mission

The name - Illuminate Community Church. The word "illuminate" means, "to shine the light." It's our mission to shine the light on Jesus by knowing Him and making Him known. There are many metaphors in the Bible that use light as a symbol of God's truth. Jesus said this about himself in John 8:12 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Illuminate Community

For the last two weeks we’ve been seeing God’s glory revealed through the birth of Jesus. We learned that a Christian's joy is not tied to circumstances, rather it is tied to Jesus our savior who loves us unconditionally. He is Immanuel, always with us. The Christmas story holds yet another revelation of God’s glory. This revelation is often misunderstood because we’ve heard it misquoted many times, “Peace on earth and good will toward men.” Not quite. 
 
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:14 
 
Christmas peace is not primarily between man, it is between God and man. Paul gives clarity in his letter to the Romans. 
 
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1 
 
It’s interesting to notice here that Paul didn’t say we have “peace of God” nor even “God’s peace in us”—though both those things are also true. Instead Paul said we have peace with God. That tiny word makes all the difference. You see, when there’s hostility between you and God, it’s a one-way battle. We sin and make ourselves enemies of God, but because of Christ, God refuses to make himself our enemy in return. You and I lash out in defiance and disobedience and selfishness and pride and hurtfulness. We miss the mark and we misunderstand how our own sin hurts us and those around us. 
 
Theologian William Newell reframes it this way, “Our peace with God is not as between two nations before at war; but as between a king and rebellious and guilty subjects.” Think of a child who screams to a parent, “I hate you!” and then runs off and slams the door. The kid is angry, but the parent is heartbroken. They don’t want to be close to you but you still want to be close to them. This is how it is with God. We’re that stubborn child shouting, “I hate you!” as we stomp off and slam the bedroom door. Meanwhile, our Heavenly Father refuses to retaliate, waiting instead for us to return again to His presence in peace. Why? Because, “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ!”

- Spirit Beings’ rebellion – led by Lucifer 
- Human beings eat the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil 
 
* The Promise – The SEED of the Woman – Genesis 3:15 
- God made a Promise (in the curse on the serpent!) 
- ENMITY (hostility) between the ‘seed of Satan’ and the ‘seed of the woman’ – what is the ‘seed of Satan’ and what is the ‘seed’ of the woman? 
- Satan would bruise “HIS” heel – “HE” would bruise Satan’s head! 
 
* The Promise – The Virgin conception – Isaiah 7:14 
- What kind of prophecy is this? Virgins can’t conceive and bear children!! 
- “IMMANU-EL” is GOD (singular) WITH US! WOW!!! 
 
* The Promise – The Son is Born – Matthew 1:18-25 
- Matthew gives all the necessary details of WHY YHWH GAVE HIS PROMISE AND HOW HE KEPT HIS PROMISE! 
 
Timeless Truth 
God keeps His promises – PRECISELY, COMPLETELY, and ABSOLUTELY! The SEED OF THE WOMAN is “IMMANU-EL” – “GOD WITH US” and his name is “JESUS”! 
 
Living Lesson 
Do not let this Christmas season pass without telling and retelling the beautiful Christmas story over-and-over again. Read, study and discuss the many Scripture passages that provide the wonderful details of the story of the INCARNATION of the 2nd Person of the Eternal Godhead – “IMMANU-EL – GOD WITH US”!

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
