Our congregations suffer, though in a less degree, from a similar neglect of this important aspect of the duty of the Christian preacher. 'stone' does not 'succeed stone in course, ' except perhaps at the special seasons of Lent and Advent. And thus while there is fervent appeal and strenuous reiteration of the first principles of Christ, there is little progress, little synthetic grasp of the parts of the One Faith; and the result can only be vagueness and inconsequence and spiritual debility; and people fear to meet the attacks of the unbeliever, because they do not properly know what it is they have to defend.
