Here are few to whom this book will seem worth while. It embodies long labor, spent on a minor poet, and will probably never be read entire by any one. But that is a reason for its exist ence. Lavishness is in its aim. The book is a box of spikenard, poured in unappeasable love over one who has attended my life. When I lay in my cradle, a devotee of Herbert gave me the old poet's name, so securing him for my godfather. Before I could well read, I knew a large part of his verse, not its meaning, but (what was more important then) its large diction, flexible rhythms, and stimulating mysteries. As I grew, the wisdom hidden in the strange lines was gradually disclosed, and in daily experience.
