The Lenten Homilies On Genesis
These eight homilies on the book of Genesis were delivered during Lent by the young priest John in Antioch around the year 385. They are differentiated from his larger set of 67 homilies on Genesis only by a title given by a later scribe. During the Lenten season it seems his congregation would regularly gather to hear the "golden-mouthed" preacher.

It is believed that the Greek text available today corresponds closely to the actual words of John Chrysostom, which were likely transcribed by a stenographer who was able to capture not just St. John's sermon but also his off-the-cuff remarks as well. For example we find St. John admonishing his congregation for being distracted by a deacon lighting the lamps.

John Chrysostom covers a number of topics in his sermons which focus on Genesis 1-3. Such topics include, the role of men and women, the role of authority, the benefit of almsgiving, and many others that are as relevant today as they were in fourth century Antioch.
