Ce livre, venant apres tant d'autres qu'a suscites la capti vante personnalite de Newman, n'ignore pas le labeur qui a deja ete accompli. On a tout dit, semble - t - il, tant en France qu'en Angleterre, sur l'ame delicate et energique de John Henry Newman, le jeune fellow d'oxford, qui devait mourir cardinal romain, et l'on a, de divers cotes, soumis ses principes religieux a une etude si penetrante qu'elle a grande chance de demeurer, pour notre generation du moins, definitive. Aussi ce livre ne se presente - t-il pas comme un nouvel essai critique sur Newman, mais seulement comme une esquisse historique de sa pensee, consistant surtout en extraits de ses oeuvres empruntes aux differentes periodes de sa vie. Je me suis propose, non de le juger, mais de lui donner la parole le plus possible, et de le laisser exposer lui meme l'evolution de ses idees.

John Henry Newman was a Roman Catholic priest and cardinal who converted to Roman Catholicism from Anglicanism in October 1845. In early life, he was a major figure in the Oxford Movement to bring the Church of England back to its Catholic roots.
Eventually his studies in history persuaded him to become a Roman Catholic. Both before and after becoming a Roman Catholic, he wrote a number of influential books.
