R. C. Sproul

Robert Charles Sproul was an American Reformed theologian and ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church in America. He was the founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries and could be heard daily on the Renewing Your Mind radio broadcast in the United States and internationally. Under Sproul's direction, Ligonier Ministries produced the Ligonier Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, which would eventually grow into the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, of which Sproul, alongside Norman Geisler, was one of the chief architects. Sproul has been described as "the greatest and most influential proponent of the recovery of Reformed theology in the last century."

Christianity denies any doctrine of the soul’s annihilation, either at death or afterward. God has created us with the capacity to live forever. In fact, we will all live forever in our souls—including the damned. The key issue is this: Must we have a comprehensive knowledge of God in order to have true knowledge of God? One of the first principles in systematic theology regarding God is the doctrine of His incomprehensibility. This means that no human can now or will ever have a totally exhaustive, comprehensive knowledge and understanding of God. God is infinite in His excellence, and we, even in heaven, will not have an infinite perspective to understand Him. We are finite creatures, and by virtue of our creatureliness, our understanding of God is limited. If, indeed, a comprehensive picture of God were required to have a true understanding of Him, this would mean that we could have no true knowledge of God because we certainly don’t have a comprehensive knowledge of Him. Therefore, the fact that our knowledge of God is partial does not mean that our knowledge is untrue.

The day of one's birth is a good day for the believer, but the day of death is the greatest day that a Christian can ever experience in this world because that is the day he goes home, the day he walks across the threshold, the day he enters the Father's house. That is the day of ultimate triumph for the Christian in this world, and yet it is a day we fear and a day that we postpone as long as we possibly can because we don't really believe that the day of our death is better than the day of our birth.

Our Savior was a suffering Savior. He went before us into the uncharted land of agony and death. He went where no man is called to go. His Father gave Him a cup to drink that will never touch our lips. God will not ask us to endure anything comparable to the distress Christ took on Himself. 'Wherever God calls us to go, whatever He summons us to endure, will fall far short of what Jesus experienced.

We have already seen that our suffering is part of the total plan of God and that God can work through evil to accomplish His plan. The fact that God has a plan is indicative that He has a purpose. The fact that He is sovereign is indicative that He is fulfilling that purpose even when He allows suffering to come upon us. As in the case of Job, He may not reveal what His purpose is, but we have good reason to trust Him.
