G.V. Wigram

George Vicesimus Wigram was an English biblical scholar and theologian. As a young man George Wigram obtained a commission in the army. One of his postings was to Brussels. He spent one evening exploring the Waterloo battlefield and it was here he had a religious experience that changed his life. This led to him resigning his army commission and in 1826 he entered Queens College, Oxford with the intention of becoming an Anglican clergyman.

At Oxford he met John Nelson Darby and Benjamin Wills Newton. Dissatisfied with the established church, Wigram and his friends left the Anglican church and helped establish non-denominational assemblies which became known as the Plymouth Brethren.

Wigram had a keen interest in the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible, which was of great interest to the emerging Brethren assemblies. In 1839, after years of work and financial investment, he published The Englishman's Greek and English Concordance to the New Testament, followed in 1843 by The Englishman's Hebrew and Chaldee Concordance to the Old Testament.

With Wigram's help, Darby became the most influential personality within the Brethren movement. Wigram is often referred to as being Darby's lieutenant as he firmly supported Darby during moments of crisis. He also helped Darby fend off accusations of heresy, also in regards to the sufferings of Christ, in articles written in 1858 and 1866, which some considered were very similar to Newton's errors two decades earlier.

George Vicesimus Wigram was converted whilst a subaltern officer in the army, and in 1826 entered at Queen's College, Oxford, with the view of taking orders. As an undergraduate he came into contact with Mr. Jarratt of the same college, and with Messrs. James L. Harris and Benjamin Wills Newton, both of Exeter College, who were all destined to take part in the ecclesiastical movement with which Wigram's name is also prominently connected. This connection was strengthened from about the year 1830, when these friends, all Devonians, were associated in the formation of a company of Christians at Plymouth, who separated from the organised churches, and were gathered to the Name alone of Jesus, in view of bearing a testimony to the unity of the church, and to its direction by the Holy Spirit alone, whilst awaiting the second coming of the Lord.

Wigram was active in the initiation of a like testimony in London, where by the year 1838 a considerable number of gatherings were formed on the model of that at Plymouth.

In 1856 he produced a new hymn book, "Hymns for the Poor of the Flock," which for some twenty-five years remained the staple of praise in the meetings with which he was associated. Ten years after the first appearance of the hymn book edited by him he stood by J. N. Darby once again at a critical juncture, when the question of the doctrine maintained by the latter on the sufferings of Christ some further dissension occurred, though the teaching was vindicated. During the rest of his life he paid visits to the West Indies, New Zealand, etc., where his ministry seems to have been much appreciated. He passed away in 1879.

Letters of G. V. Wigram 5

Saturday, August 3rd. MY DEAR -, -- I feel my letter yesterday was too much of myself. After it was gone I judged, "God at the helm" ought to have been more boldly spoken out for; and yourself, who know His saving power, and how Satan is watching everything whereby to dishonour Him, and make us look... The Present Place of Christ

Hebrews 12. There is a marked distinction between God's actings in old times and since the day of Pentecost. He had revealed Himself to man in man's circumstances till that day; since then He has been requiring man to come into His circumstances. The whole testimony of God now is to what Christ is i... Gospel Address

2 Corinthians 5: 9-21. There are two things very manifest. The first of them is, the world as such does not know the true God, nor Jesus Christ, whom He has sent. (John 17: 3.) The second is, the result that the believer that does know Him gets eternal life, and this eternal life is not merely the c... Read More

Christ: the Way, the Truth, and the Life

John 14. I think, if you study the Gospel by John, you will find it is taken for granted in John 11 that the Jews would not have Him. He, the Son of God, brings in the doctrine of resurrection; in John 12 there is a flitting across the earth of His various glories -- Son of man and Son of David. The... Read More

Two Requests of the Lord to His Father

Notes of a Gospel Address

Psalm 32. It is remarkable how individual the experience given in this psalm is. The writer of it had been taken up by God as a shepherd boy, and put on the throne. There he committed three of the most awful sins that the law of God condemned -- adultery, murder, and corruption. He used the very thr... Read More

The Cross of Jesus Christ

What are its uses and applications, by the Spirit, in the Scriptures? The cross seems to me to be used in scripture as especially connected with shame and disgrace. The cross was in itself a cruel and a disgraceful heathen mode of death -- kept, even by them, for the very vilest. It seemed to say --... Read More

Choice Quotes, Part 1

Christ's yesterday was the accomplishment of redemption, -- His tomorrow is the having His Church with Himself in glory. But He is a living Christ for today. Christ cannot light a single spark in the heart of an individual, without that little tiny spark being for God. He gives the light, and has or... Read More

Has Christ Destroyed the Works of the Devil

"Can it be positively asserted that the Lord Jesus Christ has destroyed the works of the devil?" Not according to the scripture which states, "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy (or loose) the works of the devil." (1 John 3: 8.) The word here rendered from the Gree... Read More

Waiting for God's Son

1 Thessalonians 1. The doctrine of the Lord's coming is brought out in a remarkable way in these two epistles. These Christians were those who "waited for the Son from heaven." If we compare 1 Thess. 1: 1 with John 20: 17, we shall see in the former the Lord speaks of the assembly, in the latter ind... Read More

Choice Quotes, Part 2

Faith should be energetic, active: I am not to be merely musing about the glory; but the certainty of Christ's having apprehended me for it, is to set me looking right forward, pressing onward to the goal. What is feeling for Christ, if it does not separate the heart from the world? It is a differen... Read More

The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Galatians 6: 14. But as to me, away with the thought of boasting, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. He that can say "Our Lord Jesus Christ," ought to boast in His cross. Coming of the Lord

1 Thessalonians 1. The Lord is coming. Yes, that is true. It is the Lord; but I am a son of God, and I wait for God's beloved Son to come from heaven. Thursday afternoon, 22nd, October, 1868, at Edinburgh by G. V. W. (Bound with other addresses by J. N. Darby.) Hearkening

The Scripture instructs us in one beautiful character of strength in obedience, in the 103rd Psalm, "Bless the Lord, ye His angels, that excel in strength, that do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His word."
