H.J. Vine ( - )

H.J. Vine was involved in the early Plymouth Brethren movement. The Plymouth Brethren are a conservative, low church, nonconformist, Evangelical Christian movement whose history can be traced to Dublin, Ireland in the late 1820s, originating from Anglicanism.

Among other beliefs, the group emphasizes sola scriptura, the belief that the Bible is the supreme authority for church doctrine and practice over and above "the [mere] tradition of men" (Mark 7:8). Brethren generally see themselves, not as a denomination, but as a network (or even as a collection of overlapping networks) of like-minded independent churches.

The Work and Worthiness of the Lamb of God

Notes of an Address given in Edinburgh 1922 on John 1:29, 35-37 and Revelation 5:9-14 The first time, dear friends, we have the Lamb mentioned in the Scriptures is in the 22nd of Genesis, when Isaac asked the question “Where is the lamb?”; and the last time is in the closing chapter of the Bible, in... The World’s Maker, Israel’s King and God’s Children

The One who made the world came into it as a Man, but the world did not know Him. He was the rightful King of Israel, but His own nation did not receive Him. There were those who did, however, and there are those today who believe on His Name of divine and royal worth. He Himself gives to such the r... Read More

To Know Him

Answer to Correspondence—Why is it so often urged upon believers that they should know the Lord? Do not all true believers know Him? All true believers know our Lord Jesus Christ as their own personal Saviour most surely; but it is, nevertheless, of the utmost importance that we should all go on to ... Read More

Unity and Peace

The unalterable truth of God is this: “There is one body and one Spirit, as ye have been called in one hope of your calling” (Eph. 4:4). The unity of the Spirit is. We have not to make it. Indeed, we could not, for it is the unity of the Spirit. We are, however, to use diligence to keep it, in the d... Read More

Upward Still

Paul pressed onward. The calling on high in Christ Jesus was before him. Forgiven, justified, saved and reconciled to God through the death of His Son to start with, he still urged forward to the heavenly goal. The same grace which called him has called us. The same love of God which blessed him has... Read More

Visiting the Iniquity of the Fathers Upon the Children

These words have often produced painful and even rebellious thoughts in the minds of the uninstructed, principally because of their being almost invariably misquoted, for both books and speakers in general say, The Lord visits “the sins” of the fathers upon the children. That is not what the Word of... Read More

Walking Heavenward

Enoch had a family of sons and daughters, but these earthly relationships and responsibilities did not hinder him walking in wisdom’s ways well-pleasing to God! He was the father of Methuselah, and we are told that Enoch walked with God (after the boy’s birth) until “he was not, for God took him.” T... Read More

What is the Position of a True Believer in Regard to the Nations?

The position in which God has set the believer is a threefold one; or, more correctly-speaking, he is set in three distinct positions as to the nations. 1. As being “in Christ,” he is above them. 2. As being of God’s house, he intercedes for their rulers. 3. As one of God’s people, he is subject to ... Read More

What is the Power of Gathering?

Answer to Correspondence—“Two tracts, which I have read, make me in my ignorance send you this question. One tract by the late J.N.D., entitled, ‘Grace the Power of Unity and of Gathering,’ and the other tract by the late C.H.M., entitled ‘The Assembly of God,’ where, on page 32, it reads, ‘As Jesus... When He Comes Home

There is something singularly sweet in these words of the Lord. They find an answering echo in most hearts, and that in a special way just now; but in none more so than in the heart of him who knows the love of Christ. We heard an anxious wife, who had received an official report that her husband wa... Read More

Who is this Son of Man?

Glorious and astonishing things are spoken of the Son of Man; and the Spirit strikingly shows in the Scriptures His wonderful works, ways and worth; foretelling too in the Old Testament His exceeding majesty; and recording also in the New His surprising humiliation. Set at nought, mocked, scorned, s... Read More

Wisdom and Grace; or, Within and Without

Wisdom and grace are choice companions, and their friendship should be constantly cultivated by the believer. They are both of God, for He is “the only wise,” and “the God of all grace,” who has not only called us to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, but has also told us to be imitators of Him, as ... Wisdom and Life

“He expounded to them in all the Scriptures things concerning Himself” (Luke 24). Who is it that says, “Blessed is the man that heareth Me, watching daily at My gates, waiting at the posts of My doors. For whoso findeth Me findeth life,” in Proverbs 8:35? The same One who in the New Testament says, ... Read More

Words of Spirit and Life

“It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life” (John 6:63, N.Tr.). Yet Not I, But

Romans 7:20 What a harrowing but necessary experience is that which is described in Romans 7! Harrowing because it teaches those who in any measure pass through it the corruption of their own nature, and their helplessness to overcome it; for it surely is an appalling discovery. “In me, that is, in ...
