H.J. Vine ( - )

H.J. Vine was involved in the early Plymouth Brethren movement. The Plymouth Brethren are a conservative, low church, nonconformist, Evangelical Christian movement whose history can be traced to Dublin, Ireland in the late 1820s, originating from Anglicanism.

Among other beliefs, the group emphasizes sola scriptura, the belief that the Bible is the supreme authority for church doctrine and practice over and above "the [mere] tradition of men" (Mark 7:8). Brethren generally see themselves, not as a denomination, but as a network (or even as a collection of overlapping networks) of like-minded independent churches.

The Sign in the Depth and in the Height

Isaiah 7 Who is it to whom the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi so constantly points, raising in our hearts the very highest expectations, as it speaks of “the Woman’s Seed,” “Abraham’s Seed,” and “David’s Seed”? Who is this through whom all the world is to be blessed? What is His name? Has He ... Read More

The Son and Life

“God cannot lie.” Every promise of His shall be fulfilled, not a word of His shall fail. And He has promised eternal life and He did it before the ages of time. The promise was made before time began, but it had to be brought into and manifested in time, and when the ages of time have passed away an... Read More

The Son and Life, and Word and Wisdom

“He that believes on the Son has life eternal” (John 3:36). With all its assuring blessedness, this truth is made known in the Word of God for faith to rejoice in. It is beyond mere human understanding, nevertheless the Holy Spirit, who is the Comforter, has made it known. It is a great and unchangi... Read More

The Son and the Universe

It is indeed great grace which has granted to us the divine revelation of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ, and made known to us His relation to the whole creation, and also given to us the Holy Spirit to lead us into the understanding of these things. In speaking of the whole creation, we have in... Read More

The Son is the Son of Man”

John 5:26-27 The testimony of 1 John 4:14 says, “The Father has sent the Son as Saviour of the world” (N.Tr.), and Jesus said, “I came not to judge the world, but to save the world” (John 12:47). Nor will the designs of sovereign grace fail. Eventually the salvation of God shall bless the whole eart... Read More

The Son of God and Resurrection

When the centurion and his companions who were on guard while our Lord Jesus Christ was in the tomb saw the earthquake which opened the graves, and the things that took place at His death and resurrection, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matt. 27:54). It should be notic... Read More

The Son of God Loved Me

Few men, if any, save the Man of Sorrows, ever drank of the cup of grief as deeply as the apostle Paul did; yet he found solace in divine love all through his earthly days. To him the cross of Christ was the unique expression of that love. “I live by faith,” he said; “the faith of the Son of God, wh... Read More

The Son of God”

In regard to the assembly, the body of Christ, the ministry of the gifts bestowed by our ascended Head has in view its edifying, “until we all arrive at the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God” (Eph. 4:12-13). That is the present divine objective. It should be ours also. When w... Read More

The Son of the Father

“My Father!” From the lips of our Lord Jesus Christ those two precious words often fell. Their full meaning we may not yet have grasped, but the Spirit is here to lead us into all truth. It is plainly evident that Jesus must have been speaking as a Man when He said, “MY Father is greater than I” Thi... Read More

The Son of the Father’s Love

“The Son of the Father’s love,” by whom and for whom all things were created, is necessarily eternal. Coming into His creation, and to Israel in particular, He was “begotten” in time, to fulfil the promises made to His own people, Israel. His Name was therefore JESUS (Jehovah-Saviour), for He should... Read More

The Son” in All Supremacy and God “All in All”

“All things” are to be eternally subjected to the Son! This eternal supremacy of the Son in subjection to Him “who put all things in subjection to Him” is beautifully shown in 1 Corinthians 15:28. It could hardly be called a new supremacy, for Colossians 1 shows that “all things” were “by” as well a... Read More

The Son’s Rights in Creation

The Sure Remedy

Bright with the love of God is the cross of Jesus our Saviour, for there for us He suffered and went down into the deepest depths of death. Right up to the highest heights He has gone, “far above all heavens,” and is there crowned with glory and honour. Such an One as He is, is well able to remove a... Read More

The Testimony of the Lord is Sure”

Psalm 19:7 There is nothing variable or uncertain in the testimony which God Himself gives to men. The many may not receive it, and the others who do may but feebly respond to it, but the testimony itself is faultless, like the One who grants it in grace to a sinful world. Where it is believed—where... Read More

The True God and Eternal Life”

1 John 5:20 No subjects have called forth the energies of profound thought like these two—“The true God” and “Eternal life”; but after long ages of research, men still have to own they have failed to discover the one and to explain the other. “As touching the Almighty we cannot find him out,” is yet... The Truth or its Effects?

“Grace and truth subsists through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17).
