The Danger of Talking Too Much

Many people talk too much. There are scarcely any of us by whom are spoken no words which it were better to have left unspoken. All unkind words belong to this class. We talk too much when we speak angrily, when we say a word that hurts another. Some people seem nearly always to be talking this way.... Read More

The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved

"One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him." John 13:23 One of the most tender pictures in the gospel, is that which shows us one of Christ's disciples leaning on the Master's bosom. No name is given. We are told that it was "the disciple whom Jesus loved." We know then, ... Read More

The Duty of Being Always Strong

It is always a duty to be strong. Weakness is never set down as a virtue. Yet there is abundant proof of divine sympathy with weakness. God is the friend of the weak. Weakness draws his help in an especial degree. It is so in the realm of human affection. A child that is hurt or sick or blind, is wa... Read More

THE DUTY OF BEING STRONG

There is a duty of being strong. Strength is not a mere happy gift that falls to the lot of certain favored people, while others are doomed to weakness. Never is weakness a duty. Over and over again in the Scriptures are men urged to be strong—but they are never urged to be weak. Weakness is never s... Read More

The Duty of Encouragement

There are few things to which we need to train ourselves more diligently and conscientiously than to the habit of giving cheer and encouragement. To many people life is hard. It is full of struggles. The Duty of FORGETTING

It is a great thing to learn to live in the future. Paul put the lesson in very plain words when he said, "Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are ahead, I press toward the mark!" To get the full force of these words, it must be remembered that they w... Read More

The Duty of Forgetting Sorrow

Sorrow makes deep scars; indeed, it writes its record ineffaceably on the heart which suffers. We really never get over our deep griefs; we are really never altogether the same after we have passed through them—as we were before. In one sense, sorrow can never be forgotten. The cares of a long busy ... Read More

The Entanglements of Love

"Owe no one anything, except the continuing debt to love each other. For he who loves his fellow man, has fulfilled the law." Romans 13:8 There are other people — we are not the only ones. Some of the others live close to us — and some farther away. The law of love brings all of these, far and near,... Read More

The Ethics of Home-decoration

This is not an essay on household taste or on the artistic principles which relate to the adornment of homes—but there is an ethical side to this subject on which I have a suggestion or two to offer. It is trite to say that every home influence works itself into the heart of childhood, and then work... Read More

The Folly of Drifting into Marriage

Among the other drifts of life, many young people merely drift into marriage.
