THE GRACE OF THOUGHTFULNESS

"I didn't think!" is what people say ofttimes when they suddenly become aware of the pain which some heedless act or careless word of theirs has given to a gentle heart. Too often our thoughtfulness is an afterthought; the problem is to get it to its true place, where it will become motive and inspi... Read More

THE GREAT MYSTERY OF LOVE

The Cross was the culmination of divine love. The life of Christ was all love. He was the love of God come down to earth, interpreted in a human life, so that all could understand it. At last, on the Cross, this love found its highest expression, when the Son of God gave Himself up to redeem sinners... Read More

The Greatest Love

"May you have the power to understand, as all God's people should--how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it!" Ephesians 3:18-19 LOVE is the greatest thing in the world. Paul tells us... Read More

THE HALLOWING OF OUR BURDEN

We miss much, by not giving heed to the marginal readings in our reference Bibles. Ofttimes a new light falls upon a verse or a word, when we have noted the alternative rendering which is thus given. These marginal readings give us other shades of meaning in the original words, and ofttimes suggest ... Read More

The Hidden Life

"Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart!" 1 Samuel 16:7. In a sense, all life is hidden. The blood courses through the veins as the heart keeps throbbing, throbbing, day and night. You can lay your finger on your wrist and feel the pulsings. The lungs also continue brea... Read More

THE HOME CONVERSATION

Few things are more important in a home, than its conversation—yet there are few things to which less deliberate thought is given. We take great pains to have our house well-furnished. We select our carpets and pictures with the utmost care. We send our children to school that they may become intell... Read More

The Home-life

In a quiet nook among the hills, where great forest trees interlock their branches and form a deep shade—a little stream takes its rise. As it springs out from among the rocks, and goes rippling over the stones, only a tiny thread of silver at first as it begins its way toward the great sea. Other s... Read More

The HOME-LIFE.

Perhaps the home-life should present no problem for young people. It would not — if homes were perfect. But the best homes on earth are only schools, with the lessons only-partially learned. It is important that careful attention be given to these lessons now, for the opportunity to learn them will ... Read More

The Human-heartedness of Jesus

There is a natural tendency to think of Jesus as different from other men in the human element of his personality. Our adoration of him as our divine Lord, makes it seem almost sacrilege to place his humanity in the ordinary rank with that of other men. It seems to us that life could not have meant ... Read More

The Inner and the Outer Life

We are not merely bodies. There is a life within our body which goes on when the body has ceased to exist. The inner man does not wear out—as the body wastes away. It does not grow old, nor become feeble with the years. The inner life is not dependent on the outer. One may be physically broken and d... Read More

The Interweaving of the Days

It is a good thing to learn to live by the day. We should devote all our strength to the doing well of each day's tasks — and then should disengage ourselves altogether from its entanglements. Emerson puts it well: "Finish every day — and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders ... Read More

THE KING AND HIS KINGDOM

Jesus in His teaching, spoke much of His kingdom. On the evening of the day He died, however, it did not seem probable that He would found a kingdom, or leave anything behind Him in this world, which would endure. The Lesson of Love

The Lesson of Love J. R. Miller, 1903 PREFACE To learn how to love—is to learn how to live. The lesson is a long one—but it is the great business of life to master it. THE LESSON OF SERVICE

"I am among you as one who serves." Luke 22:27 Serving is not an easy lesson to learn. But it is a lesson we must learn—if ever we would become like our Master. THE LESSON OF SERVICE

Jesus taught that we should live, "not to be served—but to serve" This is a lesson that it is very hard to learn. It is easy enough to utter sentimental platitudes about the nobleness of service—but no one can truly live after this heavenly pattern, until his being is saturated with divine grace. Ju... Read More

The Living Christ

It always does us good, to focus on the gospel of a risen, living Christ. We need it in our life of care and struggle.
