John Nelson Darby

John Nelson Darby (1800 - 1882)

was an Anglo-Irish Bible teacher, one of the influential figures among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren. He is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism ("the Rapture" in the English vernacular). Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren, and further popularized in the United States in the early 20th century by the wide circulation of the Scofield Reference Bible.

He produced a translation of the Bible based on the Hebrew and Greek texts called The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby. Darby traveled widely in Europe and Britain in the 1830s and 1840s, and established many Brethren assemblies. He gave 11 significant lectures in Geneva in 1840 on the hope of the church (L'attente actuelle de l'église). These established his reputation as a leading interpreter of biblical prophecy.

John Nelson Darby graduated Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819 and was called to the Irish bar about 1825; but soon gave up law practice, took orders, and served a curacy in Wicklow until, in 1827, doubts as to the Scriptural authority for church establishments led him to leave the institutional church altogether and meet with a company of like-minded persons in Dublin.

He was also a Bible Commentator. He declined however to contribute to the compilation of the Revised Version of the King James Bible.

Parables of Luke 15

PARABLES OF LUKE 15 It is a wonderfully blessed thing to have One (the thoughts, and words, and ways of One down here, in His actings among men) who could so well manifest God, as the Lord Jesus. Part with Christ

Three things, beloved friends, especially come out in this chapter: 1st, the full and complete finishing, of the work which the Father had given the Lord Jesus to do; and 2nd, while that gives the full consciousness of the place we are in with God, there is the jealous care, and the holiness and wat... "Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut, where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you." Peace, Grace, and Glory Romans 5:1-11

The statements in this chapter are founded on the last verse of the previous one. God is calling back our hearts to have confidence in Himself, confidence which man had lost in the garden of Eden. Eve trusted Satan, and thought that God had kept back the thing which would make her happy. No matter h... Read More

Philippians 2

We get here how the Lord humbled Himself, and associated us with Himself according to the counsels of God. The Deity of the Lord Jesus is the basis of everything for our souls. Without it God could not be known to us. Who could leave His place but a Divine Person? I say that because I desire this ev... Read More

Twenty-First Week It is a terrible thing . . . when God's presence, in the place of being the home of our hearts, is terror and distress. It is at the beginning of this chapter that the Spirit of God marks with an especial character that on which I desire to speak - the eternal thought of God towards us which we find in verses 2, 3. There are two truths which the more we understand with God the more power we shall have.
