John Nelson Darby

John Nelson Darby (1800 - 1882)

was an Anglo-Irish Bible teacher, one of the influential figures among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren. He is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism ("the Rapture" in the English vernacular). Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren, and further popularized in the United States in the early 20th century by the wide circulation of the Scofield Reference Bible.

He produced a translation of the Bible based on the Hebrew and Greek texts called The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby. Darby traveled widely in Europe and Britain in the 1830s and 1840s, and established many Brethren assemblies. He gave 11 significant lectures in Geneva in 1840 on the hope of the church (L'attente actuelle de l'église). These established his reputation as a leading interpreter of biblical prophecy.

John Nelson Darby graduated Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819 and was called to the Irish bar about 1825; but soon gave up law practice, took orders, and served a curacy in Wicklow until, in 1827, doubts as to the Scriptural authority for church establishments led him to leave the institutional church altogether and meet with a company of like-minded persons in Dublin.

He was also a Bible Commentator. He declined however to contribute to the compilation of the Revised Version of the King James Bible.

The Object of Prophecy

In ordinary works on prophecy it is assumed as an admitted, incontestable truth, that the church is specially regarded in Daniel; and now, many believe that a godly Jewish remnant is in question, and cite the word in proof. This is a capital point. Why not discuss it? Why preserve a silence so absol... Read More

The Panoply of God Ephesians 6

One great thing in Christianity is, that it brings us back to God. Not only have we mercies from God, providential and the like, but we are brought to God. Towards the Jew God had a veil before His face, and He said, "I dwell in the thick darkness"; and once a year, on the day of atonement, the bloo... Read More

The Parables

THE PARABLES MATTHEW 13 : 1-50 I have read to You the entire collection of parables brought together in this chapter, because they collectively contain one general view of the plan of God, as developing "the kingdom of heaven": that it is not an isolated circumstance but a connected whole, full of c... The Passage of the Red Sea

THE PASSAGE OF THE RED SEA HEBREWS I I : 23-29 We have in these verses a little picture drawn by the Spirit of God, of the ways of God in bringing up His people out of Egypt, by the hand of Moses. And we may say it is just a picture of the deliverance of the church from the power of Satan, of the sa... Read More

The Passover and the Red Sea Exodus 12-14

We always find in the deliverances of God's people that God is also going to punish the world. He bears testimony against it, a universal testimony, without excepting anybody. The law distinguishes men according to their acts, but the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, because they have not beli... Read More

The Path of Faith Titus 2:11-13

This is a verbatim report of a lecture given at Edinburgh, by J. N. Darby, in October, 1873. The reader will at once perceive its special importance and application. [ED.] It is a great thing for us to know where we are, beloved - our place and condition in the sight of God; and then to know what Go... Read More

The Perfect Man

Our blessed path, beloved brethren, while waiting for God's Son from heaven, is to feed upon Him as the bread that came down from heaven. In the midst of the toil and tossings and buffetings which are the portion of God's people while in this world, He gives us Himself as the food for our hearts. Th... Read More

The Perfectness of Christ as Man in Temptation Matt. 26:31-56

The British Herald, 1875, pp. 86-87. That which is so striking in all this history is the entire contrast between "flesh" and Christ in every sense; not so much the wickedness of man rising up against the Lord, as the entire failure of everything around except Christ Himself. It is not divine power,... Read More

The place of weeping Deuteronomy 8:3

No one is led into the place of weeping without getting some joy. Israel were already God's people: He leads them into the wilderness to humble them; He makes them hunger that He may give them manna; He leads them into trial that He may give them something better. Some would say, If in the midst of ... Read More

The Pleasant Land despised Numbers 13, 14

Beloved, do our hearts indeed say "We are on our way to God"? Do we believe that, with the innumerable throng of the redeemed, we shall soon sing the everlasting anthem of praise to the Lamb? It is astonishing the simplicity of heart there is when we believe that "we are on our way to God." Whenever... Read More

The position of man, and of the world, before God

Rome was the centre of the universal empire of the world, the Gentile metropolis; and Paul had not been there; but God had made him apostle and teacher of the Gentiles; 2 Tim 1:11. In fulfilling his apostolic function, his heart was naturally drawn toward that seat of the empire and the Christians l... Read More

The Power of Life in Christ Risen 2 Corinthians 5

The hope of the believer is not death. It is "not to be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality may be swallowed up of life." He need not be unclothed, that is, of himself. The purpose of God is nothing less than that we should be conformed to the image of Christ; Rom. 8. Our proper hope is to s... Read More

The Presence of Christ and Spiritual Intelligence

There are two points which are on my mind to say a word about. First, the way in which the Lord's own presence orders the path and gives character to testimony. Secondly, the way in which personal attachment to the Lord Jesus Christ gives intelligence in everything. The way to get spiritual intellig... Read More

The Presence of the Holy Ghost on Earth... John 1:29-34

This chapter is remarkable inasmuch as it brings before us the various titles or names of Christ, almost all that He is in His varied titles, unless indeed the relative ones. The Present Effect of Waiting for Christ

There are two things which constitute the joy of a Christian, which are his strength on the road, and the object constantly before his heart. THE PRODIGAL WITH THE FATHER LUKE 15 I take this chapter because one finds that there are many sincere souls who are not in the second condition of this repentant prodigal-that is, when he had been kissed, and robed, and was in the house with the Father-they have not real peace with God. The Red Heifer Numbers 19

In Numbers 19 we learn the excessive jealousy of the Lord about sin, not in the sense of guilt but defilement. This He measures by His sanctuary. The Red Sea and the Wilderness Exodus 15

It is easy to understand Israel's distress, - the sea before, shutting them in, and Pharaoh and his host pursuing, so that they were sore afraid, and cried unto the Lord, and said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness?" Although, as we see,... Read More
