John Nelson Darby

John Nelson Darby (1800 - 1882)

was an Anglo-Irish Bible teacher, one of the influential figures among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren. He is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism ("the Rapture" in the English vernacular). Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren, and further popularized in the United States in the early 20th century by the wide circulation of the Scofield Reference Bible.

He produced a translation of the Bible based on the Hebrew and Greek texts called The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby. Darby traveled widely in Europe and Britain in the 1830s and 1840s, and established many Brethren assemblies. He gave 11 significant lectures in Geneva in 1840 on the hope of the church (L'attente actuelle de l'église). These established his reputation as a leading interpreter of biblical prophecy.

John Nelson Darby graduated Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819 and was called to the Irish bar about 1825; but soon gave up law practice, took orders, and served a curacy in Wicklow until, in 1827, doubts as to the Scriptural authority for church establishments led him to leave the institutional church altogether and meet with a company of like-minded persons in Dublin.

He was also a Bible Commentator. He declined however to contribute to the compilation of the Revised Version of the King James Bible.

The Rejected Man

THE REJECTED MAN Genesis 3 It is a good thing, seeing the great levity of our hearts, that we should all of us sometimes look at our origin, at what we were, and at the actual corruption of the stock whence we are derived. Thus shall we see what God has done, and the revelation He has made of Himsel... Read More

The Rest, the Word, and the Priesthood

We get three things spoken of here: one that we have not got, and two that we have. The thing we have not got is rest: There remaineth a rest for the people of God. The prophet says, "Arise ye, and depart, for this is not your rest, for it is polluted." (Micah 2:10.) We are partakers of the divine n... Read More

The Resurrection and Life John 11

The Lord had been now rejected, both in His words and His works. In chapter 8 He convicts by His word. "Before Abraham was, I am." There was in that the full manifestation of who He was; but they rejected it. In chapter 9 He shews His works; but this testimony is also rejected. And then He shews how... Read More

The Robber Saved Luke 23:39-43

We do not find, except during the three hours of darkness on the cross, that by any sorrow, weariness, or trial, the Lord Jesus was ever hindered from entering into the sorrow of others. None could put Him in a place, except when working out atonement, where He did not enter into human suffering: su... Read More

The Saving Grace of God Titus 2

The more we study the word, the more we see how it takes us out of the present world, and how it associates us with all things that are of God. When we come to what is Christian, it is not what the law was (that is righteous claim), but the revelation of God's grace and God's mind to give what takes... Read More

The Second Coming of Christ Luke 12:34-59

The previous part of the chapter is addressed to the world, as to laying up treasure for themselves. At verse 32 the Lord begins with the disciples. The coming of the Lord does not present itself, when we think of it rightly, as a thing we learn; but I see in Scripture that it is constantly identifi... Read More

The Service of Women

We find that the service which would commend widows to the bounty of the church were these: "If she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work." (1 Tim. 5:10) All are... Read More

The Son Pleading John 17

It is very natural that Jesus should have deeply felt, before leaving this world, all the circumstances in which His disciples were about to find themselves. At the moment when the Son had accomplished His work, and completely glorified the Father in the midst of all the difficulties and all the mal... Read More

The Spirit's Presence in the Church

The ark, the symbol of God's presence, is the great thing here - the symbol of the Spirit's presence in the Church, not in heaven but on earth. The grand argument of the apostle in urging us to cleanse ourselves, etc., is the divine presence in our midst (1 Cor. 3:16, 17; 2 Cor. 6:16, 2 Cor. 7:1). T... Read More

The Standing and State of the Believer

The possession of eternal life in Christ Jesus risen and glorified, and the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, are blessings which characterize Christianity, and it is consequently of the utmost importance for the child of God to apprehend these truths. The two are intimately connected, as we shall see. ... Read More

The Suffering Son of Man Hebrews 2

After the first four verses, which belong to chapter 1, we get a statement of the position of our Lord: all things are not yet put under Him, but He is crowned with glory and honour. In chapter 1 the apostle had spoken fully of the divinity of the Lord: in chapter 2 after the first four verses, we h... Read More

The Sufferings of Christ

THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST PSALM 22 : 22 THE whole of this Psalm evidently contains the words and experience of the Lord Jesus Christ. It begins with one of His most momentous sentences, as if a direct quotation from prophecy: "My God, my God, why ast thou forsaken me?" and gives the very words of the... Read More

The Sufferings of Christ Mark 14

There are two sides in the sufferings of the Lord Jesus; the sufferings which, during His career, He endured from men, and the sufferings which He knew when, taking the cup He had to drink, He bore the weight of the wrath of God. The extent of man's iniquity appears in two ways; directly in all that... Read More

The Temptation of Christ

{Christian Friend 1888, pages 57-64.} I desire to speak to-night of the practical bearing of these verses, and also of the grace of the Lord in it all: how man in Him is brought into this place with God; and it is the model of our place, as we get in the previous chapter where the heavens are opened... THE TEN VIRGINS MATTHEW 25 :1-13 There are just two classes of characters which we meet with in the world : first, those who have never heard the way of truth and salvation, and in consequence are not manifestly interested in it ; and, secondly, those who have heard and professed to receive it. The Testimony of the Presence of God, Numbers 10

In this chapter we get the first movement of the armies of the Lord; but before anything is set in motion the trumpets are brought into use. The Thoughtfulness of Divine Love 1 John 4:16.

This passage is one of much beauty and comfort to the earnest and lowly soul, for it presents to us God, thinking of us from our state of utter sinfulness on to judgment itself, and displays His love from beginning to end. In general, the epistle presents us divine life, that eternal life which was ... Read More

The True Grace of God wherein we stand

{Similar to, perhaps extracted from, 'Why do I groan?' C.W. 12 Evangelical vol. 1, page 186.} God is made known to us as the "God of all Grace," and the position in which we are set is that of "tasting that He is gracious." How hard it is for us to believe this, that the Lord is gracious. The natura... Read More

The Two Ministries 2 Corinthians 4 and 5

The apostle speaks here of the ministry that he had received. A man of like passions with us, he was one who in a wonderful manner lived with God so as to carry out this ministry; he laboured more abundantly than they all. Still what he ministered we receive; only he was a vessel filled in a more th... Read More

The Unity of the Spirit and the Word of God

There is a great craving in the world for union, particularly in religious things; and we have to watch that, because we can rightly recognise only the union of the Spirit. Churches, so called, are wanting to get united; the divisions are a constant reproach; but true union is on the principle of ho... Read More
