T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

Levitical Priesthood

"Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be mine own possession from among all peoples: for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel" (Exo... Read More

Life is the Basis of Everything

We will turn to the First Letter of John. And as this is the last of our evenings together on this letter, we come to the last chapter of this letter. Chapter five and verses nine through thirteen. "If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which... Read More

Life Only Comes From Life

We are now drawing this series of considerations on Life to a close, although the subject is so much greater than we could ever compass. For, as we have said, it compasses the whole Bible, from first to last; and the Bible is the history of God's relationship with man, and man's relationship to God.... Read More

Life Triumphant Over Death

John 6. You will notice that the two main parts of the chapter are the feeding of the multitude, and the discourse of the Lord upon Himself as the Bread of Life. In seeking to recognize the great truths and their laws as brought before us in the Gospel by John, the truth which is at the heart of the... Read More

Life, The Criterion

"The tree of life also in the midst of the garden" (Gen. 2:9). "The tree of life, which is in the garden of God" (Rev. 2:7, margin). "The tree of life" (Rev. 22:2,14). Thus the Bible, first and last, makes life its horizon. It would not be wrong to say that all that is within the covers of the Bible... Read More

Light Through Death And Resurrection

"Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee. And nations shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness ... Read More

Living "In the Heavenlies"

Reading: Eph. 1:3,20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12; 1:6,9-10; 3:11,21. In meditating on the subject of spiritual enlargement as seen in Paul's epistles, when we pass into this letter to the Ephesians we come into an entirely new realm. It is like passing from one world into another. In 'Corinthians' we find ever... Read More

Love the Supreme Test of the Church

"His great love wherewith he loved us" (Eph. 2:4). We come now to the close of the New Testament, the consummation in the book of the Revelation. Made Free by the Son

Let us look at verses 32 and 36. These give us a key to the chapter: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." "If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." That speaks to us of freedom by knowledge of the truth. You will notice that the declaration mad... Read More

Man Now Another Species than God Created

The above heading may be a little startling, but it will be as well for us at an early stage to realize that we are dealing with a matter of the most serious character. It is not merely that at some point man had a lapse, took a wrong turning, or became a delinquent, an offender. Neither is it only ... Read More

Manhood In Relation To The Lord's Testimony

Reading: 2 Corinthians 12 In pursuing this matter of life and incorruption, we shall now consider particularly a little phrase used by the Apostle Paul about himself, occurring in 2 Corinthians 12:2: "I know a man in Christ". Man's High Prospect and Destiny

"What is Man?" Psalm 8:4-6. - Hebrews 2:5-8. Man’s Way vs. God’s Way (Isaiah 55:8,9)

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
