T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

Ministering to the Deliverance and Life of the Elect

"...unto whom coming, a living stone, rejected indeed of men, but with God elect, precious, ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 2:4-5). More Pioneers of the Heavenly Way

Genesis 45:5,7 "God did send me before you to preserve life" "God sent me before you to preserve... a remnant" It is clear from this double statement - "God sent me before..." - that Joseph was one of God's pioneers of the heavenly way. Moses

Reading: Hebrews 11:24-27, 13, 16. God has one great desire - to have what may be termed a 'a people of His best'. Until He has such a people, He will never be wholly satisfied. There may be those who will accept His 'second-best' - for He surely often allows a second-best - but only a people set on... Read More

Moses - Leadership

Having introduced this matter of leadership in a more-or-less general way, we now proceed to look into it more closely in order to learn from Bible examples the principles which are basic to it and the features which delineate it. Before coming to our first great example let us emphasize the two com... Read More

We repeat what we have said in other connections, that we are not writing even an abbreviated biography of the case on hand, nor are we engaging in an exposition of the book bearing his name. Noah and the Law of Life

As we move on in these meditations, there are two other passages of the Word of a basic character which I want to bring to you. One is in I Pet. 3:20-21. Notes on the Book of Ruth - Part 1

In a peculiar way, largely because of its comprehensiveness and conciseness, this book sets forth what was brought before us at the beginning of this conference: faith, through adversity, unto enlargement, establishment, and life. Notes on the Book of Ruth - Part 2

And so it says — "They went of the country of Moab." Why? They’d heard good news of the resurrection, and believed it, and acted upon it. They didn’t say, "Oh, that’s all talk; don’t believe that’s true. That’s only a rumor." No, they believed the report. There was resurrection. And they put their f... Read More

Notes on the Book of Ruth - Part 3

It is a glorious thing, dear friends, isn’t it, to really apprehend that our Lord Jesus hasn’t any pre-occupations, where we are concerned. We are His only occupation. Obedience to the Word of God

These messages and this ministry are based upon a three-fold supposition, or assumption: 1. That you have a very real concern to know the will of God. 2. That you are quite prepared to consider anything that may be a help to you in that direction. 3. That you are of a mind to obey any light that the... Read More
