For Reading and Meditation:      Lamentations 3:19-27Now we come to the turning point of the seventy-third psalm - the point where the psalmist takes the first step toward the resolution of his problem. We must not forget that the purpose of this psalm is to show us how the writer solved his problem, so that when we get into the same kind of difficulty we can apply the same solutions. Here, then, is his first step: "If I had said, 'I will speak thus,' I would have betrayed your children. When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me" (Psalm 73:15-16). We see in these words what it was that arrested his feelings of doubt and despair - the thought that if he were to speak out of his discouraged heart he would put a stumbling block in someone else's path. "If I did that," he thinks to himself, "I would be untrue to the generation of God's children. So, rather than discourage others with my doubts, I will not say anything at all." Some might regard it as strange that the first step the psalmist took on the road to recovery should be one with such a low motivation. Indeed, there are those who have said it was unworthy of him and that he should not have allowed himself to get into that condition. Similarly, when people in the Church today confess to having "unspiritual" feelings, I am sure you have heard judgmental advice-givers address them with words like: "You ought not to feel like that!" But the point is that they do feel like that, and reality demands that we begin right where they are and not where we would like them to be. Personally, I do not care how low a person's stand might be as long as he or she is standing and not slipping.Gracious and loving Father, teach me how to handle myself in a crisis and help me not to be too proud to begin at the lowest level. Better to have my feet on the lowest rung of the ladder than to be struggling in the mire. THE Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works; but He is especially benevolent, kind, and attentive to the praying, waiting soul. He has prepared of His goodness for the poor, and His goodness is ever great towards us. He bids us ask, promises to bestow, makes us wait, and then blesses us indeed. We have proved Him to be good; but if we had more faith in Him, and were more earnest with Him, we should see and enjoy His goodness in a much greater degree. He delivered David from the horrible pit; Jeremiah from the dungeon; Daniel from the lions; Peter from the waves; and Paul from the forty Jews. "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him." He will renew our strength, illumine our path, take vengeance on our foes, and introduce us into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. Let us wait for Him in faith, look for Him in hope, and plead with Him to work in us all the good pleasure of His will, and the work of faith with power. "The Lord is good unto them that wait for Him." Lamentations 3:25

This modest text is supported by a bolder and more eloquent one in Isaiah. " Men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him." Those that waited for the Messiah, and at length beheld him, found the promise of these texts verified in their experience. But we have not in this dispensation bid farewell to the attitude of waiting. The great and precious things bestowed upon us, do not hinder our aspirations after more transcending things to come. Faith wrestles. Faith also waits. Some have faith to wrestle; but not to wait. This waiting implies an unconquerable conviction that the manifestations of goodness which we have asked of God, he will grant in some more fitting time than the present, and after full-proof of our faith. It is immensely difficult for faith to endure, if the season be protracted. For day after day comes and goes, saying, as it goes, " You see the folly of your expectation. God has denied your request for some sufficient reason. Your expectation is vain." The providence of God seems to use similar language, declaring with a thousand voices, that your faith is erroneous and vain. By the law of your nature you pass through multitudinous moods whose differences of light and shade make things look very differently, and if faith pass serenely through them all, it is a wonder of wonders. But the exercise of faith tends also to perfect it; and the repeated, deliberate, prayerful, re-examination of the foundation laid for your future edifice, leaves at length the soul as firmly persuaded of the expected, as it is of the present. Nor while it seeks the future is it impatient with the present, but cheerfully intelligent of whatever there is of good around.

Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. § A day in Your courts is better than a thousand.
