“She’ll be comin’ round the mountain” is an old children’s song dating back to the mid 1800’s. Its current form was developed among the Appalachian mountain folk and spread to the railroad work gangs as a group song for calling back and forth. The words are essentially meaningless in themselves, but originated in an old African-American religious song that had great meaning to the slaves who joined in the antiphonal singing of songs of hope.”She” refers to the chariot of God coming for His people and the driver will be none other than King Jesus. To an enslaved people the lyrics had great meaning of hope for rescue from the misery of their lives as slaves. 
 
The song came to mind while reading about an incident in the life of King David. Remember that he was anointed as king by Samuel when he was a teenager and then spent several years running for his life from Saul. At one point he had asked God for direction and was hiding in the hill country of South Judah. Saul came looking for him and while pursuing him the text describes it as: “Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain” (1 Sam 23:26). In this case “she” was the army led by Saul who “was comin’ round the mountain”. 
 
Fortunately God was protecting David: “And Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand.” (1 Samuel 23:14). Just before Saul came around the mountain to catch up to him he was called away to deal with the real enemy – the Philistines, “But a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come for the Philistines have made a raid on the land.” So Saul returned from pursuing David and went to meet the Philistines; therefore they called that place the Rock of Escape.” (1 Samuel 23:27-28). David’s hope was placed firmly in the hands of God because he couldn’t get away from the army on his own. The African-American slaves who created the original song placed their hope in God as well because they couldn’t escape their situation on their own either. 
 
Is our hope in God too? In listening to some of my brethren lament the current status of this country I’m afraid they have placed their hope in the forces of this world. Do not put your hopes in politicians or political parties to “fix” this world. Don’t misunderstand, I’m not saying political issues are irrelevant to the Christian, but ultimately politicians and parties will either betray you or be proven powerless against our true enemy - Satan. Only God can rescue us from him. We had better be pinning our hope on God because His chariot is “comin’ round the mountain” to rescue the believers and destroy the unbeliever. Are you waiting for His chariot? I hope so, because it is “comin round the mountain.”

God’s Chariot Is “Comin’ Round The Mountain” 1 Samuel 23:26

“Collateral Damage” is a 2002 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is an absolute mess of a movie with ridiculous chases, explosions, and a plot with bigger holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. Even the emotional hook of his son and wife dying as collateral damage in a terrorist attack was not enough to make people connect with the movie. Maybe that’s what drove him into politics as he was elected Governor of California the next year. Talk about collateral damage. Even though it was a bad movie it does serve to illustrate the collateral damage that occurs every day in real life. 
 
Whether in geo-politics or the home, sin brings collateral damage. One horrific example is found in the middle of Saul’s effort to hunt down and kill David. The portrait of Saul shows a pathetic shell of a man sitting around wallowing in self-pity and whining about how nobody loves him because they won’t find David (1 Samuel 22:6-8). What he should have done was repent and embrace God’s chosen one. Verse 8 records Saul saying to his court, “For all of you have conspired against me so that there is no one who informs me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who cares about me or informs me that my son has stirred up my servant against me to lie in ambush, as it is this day.” 
 
This prompted a foreigner with no love for Yahweh to reveal that David had gone to the priests for assistance. Saul went to accuse them of treason and ordered his men to execute them. Believers in Yahweh refused so the foreigner, acting on Saul’s order, killed 85 priests (1 Samuel 22:9-18). 
 
But even worse than killing the priests was what he did next, “And he struck Nob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and infants; also oxen, donkeys, and sheep he struck with the edge of the sword.” (1 Samuel 22:19). They were collateral damage in Saul’s war against David – and God. 
 
Now let’s look inward. What kind of collateral damage has our sin wrought on those around us? Only you can answer that question for yourself, but know this – it has! It’s easy to look at the world around us and see the impact of the sin of others. And we’re so quick to look around and point it out. It’s also easy to see the collateral damage caused by our own sin. But we’re not so quick to look around and point that out. We rather tend to ignore or excuse it. Each of us has sinned in ways that caused harm to others, often in ways that will live on long after we’re gone. Every time we consider temptation and think it won’t hurt anyone – we’re wrong, it does. When we choose to sin we’re causing collateral damage, and, just like Saul, we will answer to God.

“Fella, you’re crazy!” Jerry Clower, a long dead country comedian, told a story about how his good friend Marcel Ledbetter (a made up character for his jokes) got a recruiter to declare that and keep him out of the military. Marcel was a young man and didn’t want to leave home so he walked into the recruiter’s office and started boasting about all the things he wanted to do. He didn’t want any training and was ready to swim the oceans, climb the mountains and fight the enemy bare handed. When the recruiter responded with “Fella, you’re crazy”, Marcel calmly said: “Write that down.” 
 
Jerry Clower may have been inspired by an incident involving God’s chosen King of Israel, David, that occurred while he was fleeing from Saul. After having to beg for food and eat holy bread from the Tabernacle he decided his only escape was to flee to the Philistines. But, as we would imagine, his reception was less than friendly. They knew who he was and what he had done. They even quoted the song that had driven Saul insane: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands” (1 Samuel 21:10-11). 
 
David heard their comments and in a desperate bid for survival pretended insanity. “David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish king of Gath. So he disguised his sanity while in their sight and acted insanely in their custody, and he scribbled on the doors of the gate, and drooled on his beard. (1 Samuel 21:12-13) 
 
Apparently David was a good actor because he pulled off his pretense and convinced the people and King of Gath that he was out of his mind. He was so convincing the King asked his advisors why they brought David to him. He didn’t need another madman cluttering his palace (1 Samuel 21:14-15). David took the hint and quickly escaped. 
 
The point for us on today’s Morning Minutes in the Bible is simple. What insanity do we pretend in our desperate attempt to escape God? Do we pretend that He can’t see our sin? Do we pretend our sin isn’t really that bad? Do we pretend our sin isn’t really sin at all? We may fool ourselves, we may fool the people of this world, we may even fool others who genuinely serve Him, but we can’t fool the eternal God. He sees through it all so let’s cut out the insanity and repent. God’s relentless pursuit is to save us from our insanity so let’s stop running away and return to the Lord.

There Is No Insanity Defense 1 Samuel 21:10-15

In 2002 Tom Cruise had to go on the run in a futuristic America described in a movie called “Minority Report”. The premise was that crimes could be detected before they took place, allowing the criminal to be arrested before committing the crime, creating a perfect, crime free society. It turned out the pre-crime reports didn’t always agree (hint – free-will not fate) and the owner of the corporation controlled the minority reports to his advantage. Cruise discovered it and had to run for his life. To keep the movie moving he barely managed to stay one step ahead of the law until he broke in and stole the person responsible for the minority report and was able to expose the corrupt owner. In just over two hours Tom solved America’s problems. 
 
Meanwhile back in real life we know it doesn’t happen that way. Oh, people still run for their lives, but usually get caught by the dumbest things like running a stop sign, or having a broken tail light. Sometimes folk do stay ahead of the law, but usually it’s purely by accident. Sometimes they need direct interference by others. 
 
It’s hard to believe David lived a decade on the run from Saul. Sometimes he almost got caught by the dumbest things – like hiding in a cave that Saul entered to use as a bathroom in one case. But he always managed to escape. Sometimes with human intervention and sometimes by divine intervention. Since David himself was a prophet, who lived when other prophets were around, the Bible records a few of the times where God’s direct intervention was necessary to help him escape Saul’s attempts on his life. 
 
One of those times of direct intervention was recorded in 1 Samuel 19 when David’s decade long flight from Saul first began. Despite his earlier promise to Jonathan Saul made killing David a military priority Last time we saw David’s wife (Saul’s daughter) helped him escape. Not knowing what to do David fled to God’s prophet, priest, and judge, Samuel. When Saul found out, he sent men to get David, but everyone sent to get him was overwhelmed by God’s Spirit and began to prophesy (1 Sam 19:18-24). 
 
Even Saul was overcome by God’s Spirit and began prophesying. The details of what the men prophesied are not revealed so there’s no point in speculating. What is clearly revealed is God directly intervening to stop Saul from doing what he wanted to do. God was going to protect His servant David no matter how hard Saul tried to kill him. 
 
Since it was God working there was no “minority report”, there was simply THE REPORT. Too bad Saul wouldn’t listen. It would have saved him a decade of desperation, disappointment and self-destruction, and perhaps, more importantly, his soul. What about us – do we listen to God? He has given us one report to tell us what He wants us to do – the Bible. If we will listen and obey it will save our soul.

God Intervenes To Save David 1 Samuel 19:18-24

“Anger Management” is one of Adam Sandler’s many unwatchable movies. It’s billed as a “slapstick comedy” but it’s not funny and is so profane that it’s just unwatchable. It is truly NAFC (Not Appropriate For Christians). Which is sad because the concept has great importance as well as potential for humor. The premise is that Sandler loses his temper on a plane arguing with a passenger, gets arrested, and is sentenced to “Anger Management” sessions with a psychiatrist who just happens to be the passenger he argued with on the plane. Of course the therapist is aggressive and unorthodox in his methods. Yes, only in a movie. 
 
In real life people with anger problems are not helped by aggressive in your face therapy. That only serves to escalate and intensify their anger. It’s like pouring gasoline on a fire and being surprised that it blew up instead of going out. In real life they need people who listen quietly and address the reason for their anger. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. When Saul openly discussed his intent to kill David the fake movie therapist would have gotten in his face and stirred up his anger in an effort to calm him down. In reality Saul’s son Jonathan approached his father to quietly and calmly discuss the issue: Saul’s anger at David. The text says; “Then Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father.” 1 Samuel 19:4-6 records the encounter. 
 
Jonathan followed up by touching on several issues in a very persuasive manner. He first addressed Saul’s actions with a direct “Don’t sin against your servant David” and gave several good reasons. First he made it clear that David had done nothing wrong to deserve Saul’s anger. Second, David’s work for Saul was exemplary and been very good for Saul. David had risked his life in battle against the Philistines for Saul and his victories were ultimately Saul’s victories. Third he stated that Saul knew this and rejoiced in it so was wrong to be angry against David and seek his life. 
 
Saul listened to Jonathan and was calmed down enough to rescind his order. “Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed, ‘As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death’” (1 Samuel 19:6). Now that’s anger management. 
 
We live in a loud, angry, world that seeks to generate and amplify anger against any who dare cross it, or even fail to support its evil agenda. As children of God it is our responsibility to reject such anger, and to proactively engage in the effort to help angry people bring it under control, to practice true “anger management”. It won’t always work. The world still hates us, and God, so don’t expect to pacify the unbelievers for long, especially in today’s climate where gentle people are seen as targets. After all, Saul still kept trying to kill David. Regardless, we must seek to be like Jonathan.

Managing Saul’s Anger 1 Samuel 19:4-6

Is Kanye crazy or jealous or a whole lot of both? In 2020 he made the news with a run for president. Back in 2015, during the Grammy Award ceremony, he stormed the stage when another artist won Album of the Year. Then he suddenly stopped and walked off the stage without saying anything until later. We know he’s done it before in 2006 in Denmark. But his most infamous meltdown was in 2009 when he stormed the stage at the MTV awards ceremony when Taylor Swift won an award. Rudely interrupting her he took the microphone and claimed that, Beyonce “had one of the best videos of all time.” Can we chalk it up to a temporary loss of his senses, or is it something more permanent? 
 
What is wrong with some people who despite their own success cannot abide seeing someone else succeed? Is their ego so big that the idea of someone else getting recognition that they think is theirs just unimaginable? Or is it so fragile that they can’t handle the reality of losing out to someone else? Or is it some of both? Regardless, it’s not new with Kanye. We have a great example of the same thing in Saul’s reaction to the success of David after he killed Goliath. 
 
After the victory over Goliath David was brought into Saul’s army full time as a soldier and quickly became a successful leader. His success was such that the people began to sing about David being better than Saul. “(T)he women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing to meet King Saul…The women sang as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” (1 Samuel 18:6-7. This did not sit well with Saul. The text says he “became very angry” and “looked at David with suspicion from that day on” (1 Samuel 18:8-9). 
 
As the story unfolds we will see how David responds with humility and submission to God, which shows why he is a type of Christ instead of Saul. The contrast between David and Saul could hardly be any sharper, but even David pales in comparison to Christ who humbly surrendered the glory of heaven to serve our needs (Philippians 2:1-8). Jesus didn’t need to storm the stage – He is the stage! 
 
Thankfully he invites us to join him there on his stage. This glorious savior, who was motivated by love for undeserving people like you and me, calls us to follow his example of humble service. Will you bow before him? Will you join Him on His stage?

Humility Triumphs Over Jealousy And Pride 1 Samuel 18:6-9

AWKWARD! We’ve all been in that uncomfortable situation where there was an awkward pause in the conversation. Maybe it was when a group was sitting around talking and someone mentioned a problem without realizing that the person who caused the problem was sitting in the group. Everyone else knows it and is hoping he’ll get the hint by their silence and stop talking. When he finally gets the hint, or worse has to be told, the silence can be very awkward. Or, perhaps you’ve met with a group of people and realize everyone is just waiting for someone other than you to show up. 
 
That’s exactly what happened with Samuel when he met with Jesse to select the new King of Israel. Remember how at first the people were nervous about Samuel’s appearance, after all he was the Judge and Prophet of Israel who just showed up in town without warning. “The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” (1 Samuel 16:4-5). Then he pulled Jesse aside and told him the real reason for coming to Bethlehem (v5). Talk about putting someone on the spot. 
 
As if that wasn’t awkward enough for Jesse then imagine being told, “No, not this one” on the very frist one. And then bringing son, after son, after son before Samuel to keep hearing “No, not this one” until finally hearing “Is this all you have?” after rejecting all seven men (1 Samuel 16:6-10). 
 
But, it got even more awkward. Jesse admitted there was another boy, but he was the youngest and just a kid. He was so insignificant in their mind they didn’t even bother to call him in for the meeting with Samuel. Instead they had left him out in the field watching the sheep. When advised of his existence Samuel extended the very awkward moment by refusing to continue until he was brought in. Can you imagine that scene? Samuel, Jesse and his family, and the whole village just standing around waiting. The whole village was wondering what was going on. Samuel and Jesse were wondering if God’s new King was about to arrive. Yes, awkward indeed. 
 
Think of it in these terms. Here in America we’re still waiting for an election decision. Some think it’s already a done deal. Others aren’t sure and just want it over because they can’t stand the awkward feeling of uncertainty and indecision. Imagine those people in Bethlehem waiting for David to come in so the question can be settled. Or imagine the whole nation waiting a dozen or more years for the end of Saul’s reign so David could take over. 
 
Sometimes waiting for God can be awkward. We don’t know the future, but we should know the God who holds it in his hands. So just be patient.

Waiting For God: 1 Samuel 16:11

According to that great documentary, “National Treasure” a treasure map is hidden on the back of the original Declaration of Independence. All you need is an oven and some lemons to make the map visible. But the map just leads to another clue, which leads to another clue, in a seemingly endless series of clues. Ok, it wasn’t really a documentary. It was an entertaining movie about millennia old conspiracies and the clues finally ended with the discovery of the Knights Templar Treasure buried in a secret vault deep below an old church building on Wall Street in NY. 
 
While the movie gives a humorous portrayal of the absurdity of the conspiracy theories that run through the minds of many, it does recognize that there are genuine secrets that must be closely guarded. If for no other reason than to protect the innocent from the cruelty of vicious ungodly folk. 
 
For instance when Samuel was told to stop mourning for Saul God gave him a secret mission – go anoint the new king (1 Samuel 16:1). Since the old king was still alive and well it was a dangerous task, especially considering how Saul had physically attacked Samuel the last time they were together. “But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.” As Samuel turned to go, Saul seized the edge of his robe, and it tore.” (1 Samuel 15:26-27). Make no mistake that was a deliberate act of violence. Saul may not have intended to tear the robe, but he definitely intended to exert his power over Samuel by force. Which meant Saul was willing to violently attack God’s anointed. And if he was willing to attack Samuel imagine what he would do to a newly anointed king. 
 
So, just like the secret map was hidden right out on display on the Declaration of Independence, God’s plan for His new king was hidden right out front for all to see. When Samuel voiced his concerns about the threat posed by Saul God told him to take an animal and declare that he was there to offer a sacrifice. Once he was there God would show him what to do (1 Sam 16:1-3). 
 
Now, some today would accuse God of being dishonest for not openly declaring his purpose. But they would be wrong. God gave Samuel a legitimate way to explain his presence without lying, while keeping the underlying purpose hidden to protect the innocent. He had no obligation to tell the world, or even Israel, and especially not Saul that the future king was safely tucked away in Bethlehem. Samuel’s declaration to Saul in chapter 15 was a clue, as was his presence in Bethlehem. More clues were coming, but that’s another study for another day. 
 
Two thoughts for us. First, we have to be able to keep secrets all the time when people share information with us that is not ours to share with others. Nor is it the business of others so a refusal to answer is entirely appropriate. A gentle “It’s none of your business” may even be necessary. God did it and so can we. Second, the purpose of the secret was to eventually bring God’s ultimate king into the world, King Jesus. He is the Ultimate Treasure, and that’s no longer a secret so let’s openly declare our allegiance to him by how we live as much as by what we say.

King David – God’s Hidden Treasure: 1 Samuel 16:1-3

“Waitin', watchin' the clock, it's four o'clock, it's got to stop 
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech 
As he opens the door, she rolls over... 
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over 
She lies and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man... 
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man... 
 
That’s the opening to a haunting song about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship who lies to herself about not being able to find a “Better Man”. It topped the rock charts for several weeks in 1994 for the rock band Pearl Jam. 
 
Looking around at our world it’s heartbreaking to realize how many women are in that position. Desperate for something they settle for just about anything, including cruel and abusive men, having convinced themselves they can’t find, or worse, don’t deserve, a “better man”. Now, knowing that even the best man is imperfect and flawed there is the danger of constantly looking for the impossible, but all men should stand up for the principle that every woman deserves to be treated well by a “better man”. And strive to be a “better man.” 
 
Today’s Morning Minutes in the Bible examines a fascinating text wherein God showed us he was willing to remove a rebellious king and replace him with a “better man”. When Saul tore Samuel’s robe trying to force him to stand beside him Samuel first told him that God was tearing his kingdom away. Saul’s violent attack on Samuel was inexcusable and indefensible. However, it was forgivable, except Saul was not a penitent man. 
 
The second half of Samuel’s statement was that God had “given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you” (1 Samuel 15:28). The better man was David, who was also imperfect, but was a genuinely penitent man. Saul would not bow before God in genuine sorrow for his sin, he only regretted getting called out. The sad result was the kingdom was torn away from him. 
 
Yet notice how both God and Samuel mourned the loss of the one who refused to become the “better man” “for Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.” (1 Samuel 15:35). It is too bad the translators didn’t use the word grieve, because that’s really what the word translated regret means. God’s heart was breaking over Saul’s stubborn heart. Knowing it was Saul’s choice didn’t make it hurt any less. In the same way the Lord’s heart aches when we aren’t “better men.” Let’s not force God to mourn our loss. Be a “better man” or woman. When we don't repent God’s pain is no less for any of us than it was for Saul

That’s the opening to a haunting song about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship who lies to herself about not being able to find a “Better Man”. It topped the rock charts for several weeks in 1994 for the rock band Pearl Jam.

Looking around at our world it’s heartbreaking to realize how many women are in that position. Desperate for something they settle for just about anything, including cruel and abusive men, having convinced themselves they can’t find, or worse, don’t deserve, a “better man”. Now, knowing that even the best man is imperfect and flawed there is the danger of constantly looking for the impossible, but all men should stand up for the pr

The Better Man 1 Samuel 15:28

“The Slap” was a 2015 mini-series on American TV that told the story of a family falling apart after one character lost his temper and slapped a child. While the child, who was misbehaving and kicked the adult, needed to be disciplined, slapping any kid in the face (your own or someone else’s) is recognized as unacceptable. Even our open-minded, anything goes, culture has some moral sensibilities. Because it wasn’t his son, the parents brought charges and had him arrested. The rest of the plot was typical soap opera stuff and nonsense that exposed everyone’s dirty little secrets and tore apart their false world. Everyone's hidden corruption was brought to light because of the slap. 
 
The Slap should remind us of the story of Saul after Samuel confronted him for sin and rebellion against God in 1 Samuel 15. Even after being charged with rebellion against God Saul knew he needed the appearance of fellowship with Yahweh and begged Samuel to at least lead in worship in front of Israel. In other words he wanted Samuel to join him in the façade, to put on a show and perpetuate Saul’s false world. 
 
He even claimed to repent and ask for God's forgiveness. “I have sinned; I have indeed transgressed the command of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and listened to their voice. Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me, that I may worship the LORD.” 1 Sam 15:24-25. Notice how even the repentance repeated the excuse. 
 
But the depth of his corruption was revealed by his version of The Slap. Samuel refused to participate in the phony worship and reminded Saul that God had rejected him as King of Israel. When he turned to leave Saul grabbed his robe and tore it. Samuel responded by telling Saul that God had torn the kingdom from Saul that day (1 Samuel 15:26-28). 
 
What does that tell us about the power of sin and rebellion against God? Once it gets in our heart it is extremely difficult to root out. In the fictional world of “The Slap” the whole group of adults was engaged in despicable acts that were hidden from others. But the slap was out in the open. It exposed an evil heart, and ended up exposing everyone’s sin. 
 
Saul claimed to repent but the lie was exposed by his use of force against Samuel. Saul was determined to do it his way not God's way and reacted in violence to Samuel's refusal to go along with him. His core of corruption was exposed when he was called out for his refusal to obey God. This was a direct threat of violence against God's servant. “You will do what I say” was Saul's clear message. 
 
What about us? Do we react angrily when someone questions our religious beliefs and practices? Oh, we may not reach out and tear their robes, but if we tear into them verbally, to their face or behind their back, that's when our core of corruption is exposed. That's when we show the world our disobedience to God isn't an innocent mistake, but comes from a corrupt soul. Ladies and gentlemen we can’t hide what’s in our heart from God, and eventually it’ll come out in public with a slap.

How Saul Slapped Samuel: 1 Samuel 15:24-28

That line from “My Way", a 1969 song by Frank Sinatra, captures the essence of the song that was written for him by another musician as a tribute to his career. Written when the baby boomer “me generation” was going strong the song fit not only Sinatra’s persona, but the times as well. The song was written from the view of an “old guy” looking back and boldly declaring “I did it my way!” Born in 1915 Sinatra was clearly not a “me generation” baby boomer so why did he get this song and make such a hit out of it? It’s simple, he may have been an “old guy” in the 60’s but he fit the spirit of the times. 
 
But, let’s not fool ourselves the song is an anthem to many people today, especially in the religious arena - including many of us who would deny it. And, it shouldn't surprise us that the song fits with a lot of people throughout history. We’ve been looking at Saul’s disobedience in 1 Samuel 15 and it certainly fits Saul. 
 
When Samuel asked him about the bleating of the sheep Saul not only made excuses, but tried to argue that he had obeyed God (v20). The only way it could be considered obedience is if we can expand the parameters of obedience to also include disobedience, which is exactly what Saul tried to do in v20. “I did obey the voice of the Lord, and went on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and have brought back Agag the king of Amalek...” He just folded that act of disobedience into the other acts of obedience. 
 
And that was after Samuel had reminded Saul of some critical facts. He was king of Israel only by the grace of God (v. 17), and had been given a specific command by God (v18). His pointed question “Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord” made it clear he had not obeyed God. Then Samuel concluded by saying his decision to “do it my way” was evil in God’s sight (v. 19). 
 
Satan has never stopped working on getting us to rely on our own wisdom instead of God’s; to believe that doing worship “our way” is actually obedience to the will of God. From the first exposure in the Garden of Eden until now his best weapon is to get us to challenge the parameters of God’s will with the question “Has God said?” Saul claimed obedience when he knowingly did not do what God said. What about us today? Are we really any different in our “obedience”? It’s not obedience if “I did it my way”. Let's turn away from the evil of disobedience and do worship God's way. Come on, let's do that instead of acting like Saul.

Worship God’s Way Or My Way? 1 Samuel 15:20-21

“The Silence Of The Lambs” is a tough movie about the search for a terribly twisted serial killer. Jodie Foster plays the part of the FBI agent who eventually tracks and captures him before he kills his latest victim. The title is somewhat misleading because it doesn’t seem to have any connection to the movie, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear. By saving the victim of the serial killer Foster hopes to silence the lambs that haunt her dreams from a traumatic event as a child hearing lambs crying out as they were being slaughtered on a ranch. In the end she realizes it just means they’re dead. 
 
Wednesday we saw how Samuel was heartbroken over the disobedience of Saul that ended all hope for his kingdom. We also saw that it broke God’s heart even more. Until we understand that we cannot appreciate the serious offense of our own sin. 
 
The command to Saul was tough, but very clear: destroy every man, woman, child and animal from Amalek. Yes, you heard correctly. God ordered Saul to slaughter them all (1 Samuel 15:1-3). Even reading about it makes me flinch. And please, no lectures from atheists, life is meaningless if you’re right, or any pro-choice proponents, since you support the slaughter of unborn children. But, it was what God had ordered, and who are we to question God? If you have questions about God’s moral authority to give such an order get a copy of Doy Moyer’s sermon on Slaughter of the Innocents delivered at the 2015 Florida College Lectures in Temple Terrace Florida. He did an excellent job of putting it in perspective. 
 
The description of Saul’s preparation and attack in 1 Samuel 15:4-7 reads like everything proceeded as God planned. But, verses 8 & 9 reveal a problem. Saul “spared King Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to destroy them utterly.” 
 
Saul’s boast when Samuel approached was a classic denial of reality. His statement was a jubilant “Blessed are you of the Lord! I have carried out the command of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 15:13). Samuel’s answer cut through the lie and brought Saul crashing down to earth: “What then is all this bleating of sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” (15:14). Instead of being met with the silence of the lambs he was met with a large healthy noisy herd of sheep and cattle. 
 
Saul immediately began to blame others for his failure to obey God, and then made the ultimate, unbeatable excuse – it was all done so they could worship God (v15). We’re no better than Saul in today’s world. Anything and everything man can conceive is “justified” as worship. In reality it isn’t worship of God, but of our own sensual desires. Just like Saul and Israel “were not willing”, people today are not willing to do the will of God. Of course when we disobey God we create all kinds of reasons to justify our disobedience, and silence our own conscience, but God is never fooled, and he always has the last word. What will that word be to us?

Is It Worship Or Disobedience? 1 Samuel 15:8-15

Have you ever “expanded the parameters of your promise”? That’s how one TV politician explained his actions when caught in a lie. Of course no real politician would use it, but it’s a great line that describes what they do when they don't keep their word. When they realize their promise was too narrow and required too much they take the words they said and expand their meaning to give themselves more room to move. In other words – they lie! Regardless of what they initially meant, or the recipients understood, they unilaterally change the meaning to serve their own purposes. When they do it they may feel bad, but in the end it’s ok because they needed the flexibility. But let their opponent do it and they’re just a low down, dirty dog liar. 
 
The beginning of the end for Saul was when he “expanded the parameters of his promise” with respect to obeying God. At his coronation in 1 Samuel 12 Saul, along with the nation, had promised to obey God, but when things got tight Saul found flexibility in that promise and unilaterally changed the meaning to serve his own purpose. Of course since he had the noblest intentions it was ok – at least to his way of thinking. He had to do it his way instead of God's way. (1 Samuel 13:11-12). Samuel said it was foolish and cost Saul his kingdom as a result (1 Samuel 13:13-14). And so it goes today for far too many of us non-politicians. 
 
In today's Morning Minutes in the Bible on Traditional Tuesday let’s consider some ways we “expand the parameters of our promise” with respect to keeping Gods’ word. Is the simple bread and juice too confining for the Lord’s Supper even though that’s what Jesus said we should eat (1 Corinthians 11:17-34)? Is water baptism too demanding even though Jesus (Mark 16:16) and the apostles (Acts 2:38 and in many other places) commanded it? Is one man and one woman sharing themselves only with each other for life unfair even though it was God’s plan from the beginning (Matthew 19:3-9)? Those are just three examples of God's commands people find too confining: where our traditions call for doing things differently than God authorizes. There are many, many, more we could list. 
 
We can call it “expanding the parameters” all we want, but God has another word for it: rebellion, and every rebellion arises out of a lie, either to someone else or to ourselves. And the biggest lie is when we tell ourselves “It's okay, God won't mind at all.” Yes he does. And not even the parameters of his grace can expand enough to let us live in rebellion.

Don’t Expand The Parameters Of God’s Authority: 1 Samuel 13:11-14

Should Prince William, with his adored and adorable Kate, and their cute kids, become King of England instead of Prince Charles? There’s a strong sentiment among many for the crown to skip Charles and go straight to William. It’s hard to imagine Charles as king. Much of Britain hasn’t forgiven him for his atrocious treatment of Princess Diana, though it’s been 23 years since her death. Also, he’s known more for serial social faux pas and backward thinking than for forward looking brilliance. Since his “mummy” continues to go strong at 94, and he turns 72 next month, he may never get the chance. 
 
This scene is somewhat similar to the story of Saul and his son Jonathan. Though Saul had been made king, and did some things right, he made a serious spiritual faux pas by rebelling against God’s word and offering a sacrifice instead of waiting for Samuel (1 Samuel 13:8-14). That choice cost him the throne, though it was a long time before he died and David became king. Already his inability to handle the pressure of the throne had manifested itself in bizarre behavior that only got worse as the years unfolded. Jonathan on the other hand seemed to have a solid grasp on reality and, along with his complete trust in God, may have made a better king. But that was not God’s plan either. 
 
Our first introduction to Jonathan was as a grown man demonstrating his faith in God in the middle of the tense situation with the Philistines. Because Saul disobeyed God he lost the trust of the nation, and they were being pressured by the Philistines. And, because of his lack of faith Saul sat back rather than push back with the few soldiers who stuck by him. 
 
In sharp contrast Jonathan took on an outpost of twenty Philistine soldiers by himself (1 Samuel 14:1-14). When he approached them they mocked him saying; “Behold, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.”(v11). Regardless of their contempt, Jonathan, believing that God had “given them into the hands of Israel”, went up and defeated the entire garrison. 
 
God used that victory to stir the land and move the nation to rise up against the Philistines (1 Samuel 14:15-23). Jonathan’s trust in God, demonstrated by his action, was summed up by his statement to his armor bearer: “there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or a few.” (v6). Think of what Saul could have done if he had believed it. 
 
This world is filled with evil people who hate God and those who serve him. The faithful people of God are few and consider themselves small. But God is not restrained to save by many or few. Think of what we could do if we would only believe it and rise up for God and his truth! It is far past time for faithful people to remember who our God is, and come out of our holes to serve him boldly in front of an unfriendly world.

God Can Save By Just A Few: 1 Samuel 14:6

“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius,…Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” What a great scene when Maximus faced the evil murderer Commodus in “Gladiator”. In true Hollywood fashion Maximus got his revenge, but also proved the truth of Confucius’ statement; “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” Think back to the ending of the movie as the body of the evil emperor Commodus was left on the arena dirt while the body of Maximus was carried off with honor. In the end there were still two graves. 
 
Studies are all over the place about the reasons we seek revenge, but the main drive seems to be based on our sense of self-worth that takes offense at any slight to ourselves or others we love; whether real (as in the case of Maximus, well except it was a movie) or just perceived. Tests have shown that the idea of revenge stimulates the pleasure centers of the brain (a genuine sensual experience), though often the reality is far from pleasant. Those who get revenge are frequently overwhelmed by feelings of bitterness and guilt. I wonder if the two people who started the argument in a Bowling Green restaurant back in January are overwhelmed with remorse over their family members who died in the resulting shoot-out. 
 
A refusal to take revenge made Saul stand out at the very start of his reign. Initially some fellows had ridiculed Saul after he was declared king (1 Samuel 10:27), but with the rest of the nation behind him after the rescue of Jabesh-Gilead he refused to get revenge (1 Samuel 11:12-13). Saul said “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has accomplished deliverance in Israel.” Petty revenge wasn't going to ruin that great day. Instead of digging two graves he ignored the slight and dug none. 
 
Let’s all follow that example and, remember that we have an even greater example – Jesus. He was insulted, beaten, and finally killed by his own people yet refused to give in to the pleasure of petty revenge. Instead he bore the punishment for our sins on the cross and called for forgiveness (1 Peter 2:21-25). Hmm, Maximus doesn't seem like such a heroic figure after all does he? So let's stop thinking like him and start thinking like Saul, and even more so like Jesus.

Be Like Saul And Jesus, Refuse To Take Revenge 1 Samuel 11:12-13

Lather, rinse, repeat, the instruction frequently found on shampoo bottles, has become a meme for the problem of getting stuck in a self-repeating cycle. Taken literally the person would stand in the shower going through that endless cycle until the shampoo was all gone. Then what to do: get another bottle and lather, rinse, repeat or get out and move on with your day? It has also become a metaphor for slavishly following instructions or procedures without independent thought. Sadly much of our culture is based on that concept. Not just in day to day life, but in long term cycles as well. One generation faces difficulties and challenges, and overcomes them. The next generation recreates the difficulties and challenges, forcing the subsequent one to rise up and overcome them again. 
 
This principle applies in the spiritual arena as well. For example, when Eli was judging Israel as the High Priest he was a good man, but his sons, Hophni and Pinehas, were evil. They so corrupted the worship of God that he let them be killed, the ark captured, and Israel languish for 20 years w/out true worship. Samuel, who was a boy when they died, and had been trained by Eli, grew up and was sent by God to bring the nation back to him and overthrow the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:1-14). During his time as judge of Israel he did a great job and was honored for his service to God and the nation (1 Samuel 7:15). 
 
But it was lather, rinse, repeat because his sons repeated the cycle. The text doesn't explain why, but for some reason instead of following their dad Samuel’s sons followed the path of Eli’s sons, the path of rebellion against God (1 Samuel 8:1-3). Ah, but the nation refused to repeat. Remembering the disaster of Hophni and Phinehas that lead to their defeat and the capture of the ark the people were not going down that path again so they rose up and demanded a change, a correction in advance if you will. They rejected Samuel's sons and demanded a king (1 Samuel 8:4-5). 
 
We’ll talk about the people’s mistake later, but today some thoughts on Samuel, who clearly failed to break the cycle because he lost his sons. Why? Could it be that he simply failed to understand the corruption of the culture? As a child of the 60's (born in 1960) it is clear to me that my parents' generation failed to understand the corruption infecting the 50's and 60's and much of my generation went the path of Samuel's sons. But, rather than judge our parents harshly recognize that we too can make the same mistake. Ladies and gentlemen, if you love God and want to serve him with all your heart please, please, please, recognize this world’s influence on your children and immerse them in God. That’s the only way to keep them from getting stuck in lather, rinse, repeat. Let’s break the cycle with our children.

Break The Cycle: 1 Samuel 8:1-3

What’s the difference between anecdotal evidence and a genuine pattern? If you see a cat fall out of a tree that's an anecdote, which means “a short account of a particular event or incident”. If you see a cat fall out of a tree every day for weeks that could be a pattern, a regularly repeated event. The first time we probably wouldn't begin to think cats grew on trees, but maybe after seeing it repeated often enough we might start to wonder. Even then we couldn’t be sure because a few anecdotes that appear connected aren’t necessarily related. Observing a few similar incidents doesn’t prove a genuine pattern. Unless we do real research to confirm the connection we might be trusting unreliable anecdotal evidence. Cat's falling out of trees may only prove that's one stubborn cat. However, leaves falling out of trees in the fall reconfirm a well-established pattern. 
 
Now, let’s talk about something of genuine importance – is trusting God based on anecdotal evidence or a genuine pattern? Ah, that’s a tricky question because in our life time we’ve seen religious people give convincing, but ultimately untrue testimonials. Many people really believed “The Boy Who Went to Heaven”, but he eventually admitted he didn't. It was a lie. Even in our own lives we have to be very careful about attributing good incidents to God acting in our lives for our special benefit because it may just be an anecdote. After all, God causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45), and bad things happen to God's people (1 Peter 4:12). 
 
However, there is a pattern of God bringing physical blessings for the righteous. It happens among nations in general, but it was especially true with the nation of Israel all the way up to the coming of Christ and the establishment of a universal church, a spiritual nation. After all such protection was promised to Abram, Isaac, and Jacob and then codified in the Law of Moses. The pattern of fulfilling the promise was established over many years as God worked with Israel. Of course there was also a promise of punishment when they sinned. A far too frequent pattern as well. 
 
During the days before Samuel took charge at the direction of God Israel was wicked and consequently afflicted. But, when Israel did the spiritual cleaning as Samuel ordered (1 Samuel 7:3-4) God rescued them (1 Samuel 7:10-11), just as he had many times before and continued to do again and again. 
 
If this had happened just once or twice we could call it anecdotal evidence. However, since it happened over and over and over, and the Bible is a reliable record of that pattern, we can conclude it wasn't a coincidence or an anecdote. Which is why we can trust God to continue his pattern and keep his promise of saving his people in the ultimate rescue through Jesus. Now that’s a pattern we can trust. The question isn't “Can you trust God?” the question is “Will you trust God?” A question only you can answer.

What’s the difference between anecdotal evidence and a genuine pattern? If you see a cat fall out of a tree that's an anecdote, which means “a short account of a particular event or incident”. If you see a cat fall out of a tree every day for weeks that could be a pattern, a regularly repeated event. The first time we probably wouldn't begin to think cats grew on trees, but maybe after seeing it repeated often enough we might start to wonder. Even then we couldn’t be sure because a few anecdotes that appear connected aren’t necessarily related. Observing a few similar incidents doesn’t prove a genuine pattern. Unless we do real research to confirm the connection we might be trusting unreliable anecdotal evidence. Cat's falling out of trees may only prove that's one stubborn cat. However, leaves falling out of trees in the fall reconfirm a well-established pattern.

Now, let’s talk about something of genuine importance – is trusting God based on anecdotal evidence or a genuine pattern? 

God’s Consistent Pattern 1 Samuel 7:3-4, 10-11

Imagine going to sleep and waking up nineteen years later. That's exactly what happened to 19 year old Terry Wallis after a terrible car crash in 1984 left him paralyzed and in a coma. At first he was in a persistent vegetative state that improved a little before plateauing as a “minimally conscious state”. Consider his surprise to learn how much time had passed, and imagine the shock and excitement his family had to feel when he greeted his mother with “mom” on June 12, 2003. Consider the sorrow and frustration as reality set in about what he had missed. In his mind it was still 1984, and he was a 19 year old kid with his whole life ahead of him. Suddenly he was 38 years old with serious health problems, physical and mental limitations, and family issues. Much work lay ahead as he tried to catch up. Losing two decades of life leaves an empty space with lots of problem. 
 
Now take the average human being and consider how many of us are in a spiritual coma, including those who consider themselves “Christians.” Even though we look wide awake, and think we're sharp, reality often presents a completely different picture. Many of us are so out of touch with the truth of God's word that we might as well be in a coma - despite thinking of ourselves as spiritual. Instead of dwelling in Christ and being filled with his word, most pursue a life filled with the things of this world. They live in a “minimally spiritual state.” Oh they walk and talk, and even talk spiritual talk, but are completely unaware of spiritual reality. 
 
What happens when the light of God's truth breaks through the fog and we believe the truth and, after being baptized into Christ, awake to a whole new world? Well it's the same as Mr. Wallis: surprise, shock, excitement at being alive and aware; saved. But that's soon followed by sorrow, frustration, and perhaps despair at the wasted years, especially if they were decades of a “minimally spiritual state”. The mind thinks of all that could have been. 
 
We have a great example of that very thing in the bible as Israel went through the process twenty years after the movement of the ark and destruction of Shiloh. For twenty years they lived in a minimally spiritual state (1 Samuel 7:2). Finally, Israel began to wake up from their spiritual coma and felt genuine sorrow for their wasted time not serving God. 
 
The Wallis family was waiting but unprepared. They had settled into a routine and suddenly had to arrange physical therapy because it caught them completely by surprise. But not God! He was waiting and ready and had a doctor named Samuel ready to help rebuild their spiritual muscles (1 Samuel 7:3). 
 
God is waiting and ready for you to wake up from your spiritual slumber. Jesus, the great physician, is the only one who can wake us from our “minimally spiritual state.” He's gently calling you, whispering softly “Now is the time to wake up.” Wake up my friends. And don't despair about the wasted years, be excited about the Lord's love and mercy and spread the message.

Wake Up From Our Minimally Spiritual State: 1 Samuel 7:2-3

Seattle’s game losing play in the 2015 Super Bowl was universally panned as a dumb call. It probably was, but what’s amazing is not that they tried the pass, but that so many obsess over it even to today. Mention it to any Seattle fan and watch their head explode. What’s even more amazing is that so many fret over such an irrelevant matter. After all, it’s just a game, and life is filled with many problems and issues that are far more important. But in the eyes of many the Super Bowl has become the most important event of the year, possibly of life itself. 
 
Well thinking about that mistake brings us to the story of another error, a genuinely colossal, life impacting one, when Eli’s sons brought the ark to battle. It was bad enough to lose the battle, and the soldiers, and the Ark but there was a greater consequence that’s hinted at by a simple comment – “all Israel lamented after Jehovah” (1 Samuel 7:1-2). 
 
It’s difficult to get the full meaning of the somewhat cryptic text, but it appears that Hophni and Phinehas had so demeaned the worship of Jehovah by their sin that when The Ark was taken the tabernacle was removed and the Philistines came and destroyed Shiloh, where Israel had worshiped God for 300 years. Jeremiah told Judah that God was about to destroy the city of Jerusalem and the temple itself just like he destroyed the city of Shiloh hundreds of years earlier. He told them to go and see what God did to Shiloh “because of the wickedness of my people Israel” (Jeremiah 7:12). And because of their sin and rebellion God said he was going to do to their temple “as I did to Shiloh” (Jeremiah 7:13-14). This helps explain why the folk who finally got the Ark back never reunited it with the Tabernacle. 
 
The text goes on to tell us that for 20 years (1 Samuel 7:2) Yahweh's worship languished. Finally God had Samuel call for a return to worshiping God, and God alone (1 Samuel 7:3-4). But how does that relate to Seattle and Christians today? I'm glad you asked. 
 
See, Seattle came back the next season to try again. And they kept on coming back. What about us today during our coronavirus separation? Are we trying to come back together with our brethren? Do we lament the loss of connectivity among our brethren because of the quarantine with broken hearts, with the same pain of the Seattle fans who lament the loss of a game? We do if we're serious about worshiping God with our brethren. If we're not careful we could end up with a 20 year drought like Israel.

Taking Our Losses Seriously: 1 Samuel 7:1-2

“Step on a crack, break your momma’s back.” “If you break a mirror you’ll have seven years of bad luck.” “If a black cat crosses your path you’ll have bad luck.” “Rubbing a rabbit’s foot brings good luck.” “Knock on wood.” These are just a few of the irrational superstitions that continue to permeate our society and thinking. One would think that in today’s enlightened times when we’re constantly told to trust the science (since it's always right) such nonsense would have disappeared entirely. But it hasn't. If anything it has only gotten worse. Our irrationality, along with junk science, has only increased. 
 
This isn’t about the rituals people use to help focus for big events like a concert or game. Performers who have specific pre-event rituals may need those in order to focus better and improve their performance. If it helps them “get their head in the game” as the saying goes then fine. But if they think their rituals will influence the gods, or nature, or the universe then they've entered looneyville. And, if we as fans think our own odd rituals will help our team win, then we’re guilty of magical thinking. We may know it doesn't matter, but we’ll still do our strange little rituals to “push” the ball over the goal line as if the ritual is the causal force. Why? Because we are, as the Stevie Wonder song says, “Very Superstitious.” 
 
Some folk say that all religious activity is superstition with no basis in reason or reality. In their mind belief in God is an irrational decision to think an eternal being exists when there's absolutely no objective evidence for his existence. They're wrong though. There is objective evidence and it is very rational to believe in an eternal all-powerful spiritual being. But that's a different study. 
 
To our shame, much of what passes as religious activity is irrational superstition going well beyond symbolic ritual to magical thinking. For example praying to God is a rational approach to a rational being. Praying at certain times of the day, or in a certain place, or with a specific posture is a ritual. Thinking that the place, time, or posture causes the prayer to be effective is magical thinking because it trusts in externals instead of in God. 
 
The use of the Ark of the Covenant by Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, is a great example of magical thinking. When the priests carrying the Ark stopped on dry land in the middle of the Jordan River it was God who parted the water and held it back while Israel crossed over, not the Ark. But because they didn’t respect God those men thought the Ark would magically lead them to victory over the Philistines. It certainly made them feel invincible, but it was an irrational feeling. The Ark did nothing but inspire the enemy to draw renewed strength and improve their performance. As a result Israel was defeated, Eli’s sons died, and the Ark was captured (1 Samuel 4:1-11). 
 
So today on Sensual Service Saturday let's remember to keep God's ordained rituals because we trust in Him, not because we trust in them. There's a huge difference between those two. Let's believe in God instead of mere magical thinking.
