When we think of the story of Job, we may not think of him as being “patient.” After all, he spent much of the story complaining about his situation and insisting he was being treated unfairly. But patience does not require us to remain silent about our situation. Rather, patience requires us to endure and persevere, to stick it out until the end. It’s okay to acknowledge that our situation feels unfair, but we must not give up. We must press on. In the end, like Job, our reward will be more than worth it.

Be at Peace Among Yourselves (1 Thessalonians 5:12-18)

The idea of Sabbath, taking one full day out of seven to rest, must have seemed absurd in the ancient world. And it may still be seen as absurd today. Some of us spend so much time working that we’ve convinced ourselves the world would fall apart if we slowed down; and some of us play so hard when we’re not working, that it hardly resembles rest at all. We need to be intentional about not just resting from work, but resting from being busy. We have to allow ourselves time—every week—to slow down and remember that God is at work and we have eternity to enjoy God’s blessings. Resting reminds us that we don’t have to try to squeeze everything into this vapor of a life.

Perhaps contrary to popular opinion, work was not a result of the Fall. Adam was originally tasked with work in the Garden of Eden before he ate the fruit. Humans are designed and destined to work. While work can certainly be done in a spiritually and emotionally unhealthy way, it should not be seen as a “necessary evil,” but a God-honoring use of skills, resources, and talents. In nearly every profession—whether it is collecting garbage or organizing numbers on a screen—there is a way to “image” God’s goodness in the way we help bring order to a chaotic world. Are we intentional with our time and our thinking as it pertains to our work.

David Foster Wallace once said, “There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship.” When we do not intentionally make time in our week to worship God, we inevitably spend our week worshiping other things. Worshiping God puts everything into perspective. Something this important deserves more than one hour of our week. Throughout the week, how much time do we really devote to things like prayer, singing, reflection, and discussion about the greatness of our God?

Peter wants his audience to understand that their old life doesn’t make sense in their new context. In fact, once you come to know Jesus, it’s hard to believe you used to live the life you once lived. But when you’re in the midst of that old life, it’s the only thing you know. Chances are, there are still things you’re doing that you’ll look back on and say, “I can’t believe I ever did that.” But the only way to get to that point is to make better decisions today than you made yesterday…you’ll be glad you did.

That Time is Past (Sermon from 1 Peter 4:1-6)

Paul encourages the Ephesian Christians to remember who they had been, how they had been transformed by Christ, and how they had been enlightened by the truth. Because of their transformation and their new identity, it would no longer make sense to live as they used to live when they were Gentiles. Paul encourages the Roman Christians to consider their past life and how fruitless it was; their present freedom is the result of their turning away from that fruitless life. But their future life will be determined by the decisions they make right now, in the present. So, they must choose to make themselves slaves to righteousness in the present so that they might experience sanctification in the future. If you want to experience further sanctification, you must choose right now to make yourself a slave of righteousness...you’ll be glad you did.

What Fruit Were You Getting (Sermon from Romans 6:20-23)

We never plant seeds simply because it’s what we want to do. We plant seeds because it is what we want to have done. In the future, when we harvest our crop, we want to be able to look back at the present and say, “I’m sure glad I planted those seeds.” The same principle applies in our spiritual lives. We must think ahead to the time of harvest and ask, “What will I wish that I had sown?” When you “sow to please the Spirit,” the longterm benefits far outweigh the short-term sacrifices; and someday you will look back and you’ll be glad you did.

You Reap What You Sow (Sermon from Galatians 6:7-10) - Wes McAdams

Everyone thinks their house is probably fine…until a storm comes and reveals either the strength or the weakness of the foundation. Many of us go blindly through life thinking everything is fine, until we encounter a trial. It’s better to examine the foundation now and discover whether or not we are actually building our life on the foundation of Jesus’ words.

Jesus says there is going to be confusion and bewilderment on the Day of Judgement. He says that “many” people will be shocked they are not counted among the faithful and are condemned. These people will have been those who did things in Jesus’ name, but Jesus didn’t actually know them. To be known by Jesus on the last day requires we are doing the Father’s will on this day. Before we get too busy doing more stuff in Jesus’ name, let’s ask ourselves if we’re actually doing the Father’s will.
