Jesus tells this parable in Luke 16 about the dishonest manager, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings. “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. This morning we discuss the fact that Jesus died for us collectively. Hebrews 10:11-14 says, “And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:11–14, ESV)

And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Jesus tells his followers to prioritize reconciliation above worship. If someone is angry with us, or we are angry with someone else, that becomes the priority even above offering a gift to God. This morning we will discuss the kingdom parable of the sower from Matthew 13:1-23, “That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.” Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Resurrected Focus - Colossians 3:1-4 (Sermon from 4/12/20)

Being serious about our “resurrection life” means being able to say “no” when the world threatens to derail our forward spiritual momentum with destructive and distracting philosophies. The only way to stand strong against these philosophies is to realize that a resurrected life is a filled life (a life that is lacking in nothing). When the world tells us we need something else to be “complete,” we can call their bluff because we know we who are raised with Christ are complete in him.

Resurrected Fullness - Colossians 2:8-15 (Sermon from 4/5/20)

David’s sin with Bathsheba broke his family. After the events of chapter 12, everything seems to fall apart for David. His children rape, conspire against, and murder one another. But in the midst of it all, David is given an opportunity to bring an exiled son back home. In doing so, David demonstrates the grace and mercy of God (and the coming Messiah), who is not content to allow his children to remain estranged from him. Are we taking the next steps back home? And, are we demonstrating the same willingness to restore those who are estranged?
