Confronted with Sin (Sermon from 2 Samuel 12:1-10)

For seven and a half years, David ruled as king, but only over the tribe of Judah. The other tribes of Israel, were loyal to Saul’s son Ishbosheth. David’s men and Ishbosheth’s men made war with each other. Sadly, David’s men made many mistakes along the way, but eventually, the entire nation of Israel was united under David’s rule and reign. As followers of King Jesus, we must recognize the importance of unity. No matter what mistakes have been made on either side, steps can be taken towards unity.

Uniting God’s People (Sermon from 2 Samuel 5:1-5)

There are few “new beginnings” or “fresh starts” as memorable as Saul of Tarsus’ conversion to a follower of Jesus. Saul had been a zealous Pharisee, who believed his terroristic acts against Christians were helping defend the Jewish faith and way of life. When Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus and he was soon baptized, his life began anew in many ways. But though the man who came up from the water was forgiven, he still carried his memories, experiences, and knowledge. In many ways, his baptism was simply the next step in his journey and there would be many more steps afterwards until he finished his race.

Paul’s Fresh Start (Sermon from Acts 9:17-19)

Nehemiah, cupbearer to the king of Persia, was shocked to find out that the returned exiles still had not rebuilt the wall around Jerusalem. The unwalled city was left open to attacks and manipulations from outsiders. Nehemiah helped the finish this monumental task and hoped that rebuilding the wall would usher in the highly anticipated peace, prosperity, and faithfulness to God. However, much to Nehemiah’s disappointment, the people continued to disobey. Finishing one project does not mean the whole journey is complete. it just means it’s time to take the next step by faith.

Nehemiah’s Fresh Start (Sermon from Nehemiah 6:15-16)

Ezra was a scribe and a priest, who helped the Jewish people resettle in Jerusalem after the return from Babylonian exile. He taught the people the Torah and hoped that their return to Jerusalem would be a fresh start for God’s people, ushering in a time of peace, prosperity, and faithfulness to God. Unfortunately, the returned exiles continued to struggle with sin and soon Ezra was frustrated. We ought not be surprised when we—or the people we love—continue to struggle, even after a life-changing event. We need to love them and help them take their next step by faith.

Ezra’s Fresh Start (Sermon from Ezra 7:7-10)

You might say Noah got a fresh start. He and his family were free from the torment of the evil world they left behind. However, nearly as soon as they got off the ark, Noah’s family corrupted the new world with sin of their own. They brought the sin with them into the new world and once again, things were broken. January is a whole new year; but like it or not, we have brought our struggles into this new year. But when we inevitably mess up, we don’t need a whole new year, we just need to take the next step by faith.

Jesus compares the exaltation of the Son of Man to the bronze serpent from the book of Numbers. Jesus believed that when he was lifted up on the cross, he would draw humanity to himself and they would be healed and would receive the gift of eternal life. What does it mean to be a people who believe in the Son of Man? How has his coming and his sacrifice changed our lives?

Will be Lifted Up (Sermon from John 3:14-16)

From the trial to the cross, Jesus continues to press on until he accomplishes all the Father has given him to accomplish, until he drinks the cup down to the dregs. John masterfully weaves together several passages from the Hebrew Scriptures in order for his readers to understand what Jesus is accomplishing by giving his life. The lamb of God is being slain, so that the world can experience freedom, reconciliation, and forgiveness.

The Crucifixion (Sermon from John 19:14-18)

John wants his readers to know that even though it looks like Jesus is on trial, it’s actually the ruler of the world who is on trial. Satan and all those who are in league with him are guilty and their guilt is evident by their determination to put an innocent man to death. They think they are trying Jesus, but they are actually trying themselves. Similarly, we are all on trial. Will we join forces with the kingdoms of this world or with the King whose kingdom is not of this world?

The Trial (Sermon from John 18:28-32)

John wants his readers to understand that even though Jesus is being betrayed and arrested, he is the one who is very much in charge of the situation. Even the soldiers who come to arrest him involuntarily bow before him. Jesus is determined to drink the cup the Father has given to him. Jesus’ determination and calmness should fill us with a similar determination and calmness as we follow him.

The Arrest (Sermon from John 18:1-11)

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In other words, we ought to pray for God’s name to be revered on the earth, his rule and reign to be established on the earth, and his will to be done on the earth. In the opening lines of John 17, those are exactly the sorts of things for which Jesus prayed. Do these themes permeate our prayers?

Jesus admonished the religious leaders of his day for seeking the glory that comes from man, rather than the glory that comes from God. But we also explore 1 John 3:11-18, "For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. Do not be surprised, brothers,[c] that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
