In this difficult world, your faith will be tested, and at times, severely. Faith that cannot be tested is faith that cannot be trusted. If you did a study through the scriptures, you would find that those whom God used the most were those who went through the greatest trials. There are many examples, Joseph, Moses, Elijah, David, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and many more. 
 
 But God gives principles in His word to strengthen faith in those difficult trials. He also builds a foundation of faith in your life so that when those troubles come, your faith will have been strengthened in advance. 
 
 Even now, God is strengthening your faith through His word and through the current struggles and trials you have endured. God is strengthening you in advance. 
 
Our story unfolds in the southern kingdom of Judah. The back story was that Assyria had become a world dominating power. With absolute cruelty and coldness of heart, they were destroying nation after nation, city after city. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel had already been destroyed by Assyria at this point. They had done to Israel what they had also done to many other nations, they carried them away to a distant place, caused them to lose their national identity, to simply disappear into the populations of the world. 
After Assyria destroyed and took captive the northern kingdom of Israel, they turned toward Judah where Hezekiah was King, intending to destroy and consume Judah as well. 
 
To strike fear in the hearts of those in Judah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent officers to Jerusalem to weaken and intimidate them in a war of words. 
 
This encounter between Hezekiah and Sennacherib, king of Assyria, became a monumental turning point in the history of the nation. If they had been taken away to another place and a foreign people had been given this land in their place, then all of God's promises would have come to nothing. 
 
A great spiritual battle was unfolding in this story and there are many spiritual applications and life lessons that we should apply in how we respond when troubles come. 
 
I. In a War of Words – Abide in the Truth 
 
 The king of Assyria sent officials to Hezekiah to weaken and intimidate them in a war of words. 
 
 His opening strategy was straightforward; cause their faith in God to be shaken so fear would overtake them, and they would surrender without a fight. 
 
 Sennacherib’s challenge to their faith was in verse 11, “Is not Hezekiah misleading you, saying, “The Lord our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?” 
 
 Verse 15, “Do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this, do not believe him, do not let him make you trust in the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us, and the city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’” 
 
 This is the same strategy the enemy of your soul uses today. If he can shake your faith, if he can cause you to lose confidence in who God is in your life, then your own fear will defeat you. You’ll give up without a fight. 
 
 But take note of this… 
 
A. The promises of the enemy are empty 
 Notice the strategy, Sennacherib tried to shake their confidence and faith in the Lord, he tried to strike fear in their hearts, and then tried to soothe those fears with promises of his own. But his promises were empty. 
 From 2 Kings we know that he promised that he would move them to a place where they could feel at home, where there would be an abundance of good things. 
 This is a strategy of the enemy today. He tries to convince people about how good life would be if they just surrendered to his plan for their lives. 
Illus – “Life will be so much more exciting over here in the world. You’re missing out on all the fun, man! The world is where you can live it up, don’t worry, there’s no death here!” 
Illus - In the original sin of man, wasn't that the very strategy the serpent used with Eve?

4. While waiting for God to move in our lives, it’s easy to be impatient or feel discouraged. 
5. But God has given us His Word so that we may know how to wait for God without becoming impatient or feeling discouraged. 
6. Today, we will study a passage that will show us why waiting for God is not a waste of time and how to be at peace while we are waiting. 
 
Genesis 21:1-7 
 
Transition – The first principle to remember while waiting for God to move in your life is. . . 
 
I. God Has Not Forgotten You (1) 
 
• It may seem like God has forgotten you, but He has not. 
• In fact, there is a familiar pattern in the Bible regarding God’s promises. 
o First, God gives a promise. 
o Then the promise is followed by a divine delay. 
• The purpose of the divine delay is to test the believer, to see if they will trust God and stand on the promises found in God’s Word. 
• In many ways, divine delays are opportunities or seasons of refinement so that believers may: 
o Grow closer to God; and 
o Become stronger in their faith in God. 
 
Transition – From Genesis 21, we see that. . . 
 
A. God is watching over you 
1. It had been 24 years and three months of waiting before Sarah conceived. 
2. God had said on two occasions, just months before Sarah conceived, that she would have a son the same time next year. 
a. First to Abraham in Genesis 17:21. 
 
Genesis 17:21, But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year. 
 
b. Then to Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18:10. 
 
Genesis 18:10, He said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. 
 
3. “Then the LORD took note of Sarah” 
a. “Took note of” means “watch over” or to “care for.” 
b. “To help someone in a manner that shows concern” because they are in a “difficult circumstance.” 
4. When God takes note of someone it means He is about to bring a great change in their life. 
 
Exodus 2:23-25, Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them. 
 
APPL – If there ever was a time in recent history when God’s people needed to cry out to God it is now. 
• Hatred has increased as love is growing cold. 
• Lies are spreading like wildfire as truth is suppressed. 
• Wickedness is applauded while righteousness is ridiculed. 
 
2 Chronicles 7:14, “. . . if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face 
and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (NIV) 
 
a. God heard the sons of Israel’s cry and called Moses to confront Pharaoh and deliver Israel from slavery in Egypt. 
b. When Pharaoh refused, God sent ten plagues upon Egypt, which left the empire devastated. 
c. After the tenth plague, Pharaoh released Israel and God guided His people toward the Promised Land. 
 
APPL – While waiting for a breakthrough, the silence and sense of divine inactivity can lead us to conclude that God has forgotten or is unwilling to act on our behalf. 
• Nothing could be further from the truth. 
 
Isaiah 49:14-16, But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.” Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me. 
 
• While waiting for God, we must remember that He has not forgotten us, He is watching over us.

Life here on this earth has many troubles. And there are many types of troubles. There are troubles that come from our own foolish choices and there are troubles that come from the troubled world in which we live. 
 
 As I mentioned last week, God wants to keep us from the troubles that come from our own foolish choices. This world has enough troubles of its own and we don’t need to add troubles of our own foolish making. 
 
 One of the great lessons of life, however, is to know that if you do something foolish and it brings great troubles, God is the One you must rely on for help. He will not turn you away, He will help if you trust in His hand to lead you. 
Illus – Many people plant the weeds of poor decisions in their lives and then when those weeds grow up, they have nothing but trouble all around. Here’s the answer. God may not have led you into that field of weeds, but he certainly knows the way out! There was a children’s song we used to sing in Sunday School, “The Lord knows the way through the wilderness, all I have to do is follow.” 
 Then there are troubles that come not from our own doing, but from the fact that this is a messed up and troubled world. 
 
 God wants you to look to Him in times of trouble, regardless of where that trouble came from. There are life lessons for how to respond in times of trouble. If you are not facing troubles now, you must still take hold of these principles. You will surely one day need them. 
 
That brings us to 2 Chronicles 20. The story takes place in the southern kingdom of Judah. Jehoshaphat reigned as king. He had pursued the ways of God in his life and therefore the Lord strengthened the kingdom in his control and Jehoshaphat was blessed of God. He did well for much of his life. 
 
 As we studied last week, however, he brought trouble upon himself when he decided to build an alliance with the king of Israel in the north by having his son marry Ahab’s daughter. This was not good. Jehoshaphat never asked God and this alliance got him into the thick of great trouble. Only with the help of God did he get out of that trouble. 
 
 He learned a valuable lesson. He learned from his mistake, which is a valuable lesson unto itself. Some people are so stubborn they refuse to take hold of the lessons of life. But Jehoshaphat did learn from his mistake and the lessons he learned would serve him well. 
 
 In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat faced the greatest and most difficult troubles of his life. Not just one army, but an alliance of armies was coming against him. He turned to God for help in times of trouble. But it wasn’t just the fact that he turned to God for help, it’s how he did it. The story is filled with great spiritual application and life lessons. 
 
I. Face Your Troubles with Faith 
 
 It’s very common for people to ignore their troubles, to avoid them, to pretend they will go away all on their own. But they won’t go away on their own, and the more you avoid them, the greater they become. 
 
 Face your troubles head-on and face them with faith, believing that God will be your help. 
 
 If anyone understood troubles, it would have been David. He understood where help comes from… 
 
Psalm 121:1-2, I will lift up mine eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth. 
 
 Jehoshaphat heard the report that a great multitude was coming against him from beyond the Dead Sea. It was even reported that they had already encroached as far as Engedi. This problem wasn’t going away, it was coming after him! 
 
 How Jehoshaphat responded to that trouble is the unfolding of great principles of life… 
 
A. Seek the Lord first 
 Verse 3 - before Jehoshaphat faced the trouble, he turned his attention to seek the Lord. 
 This was the error of his father King Asa. No doubt Jehoshaphat was there when the land of Judah was invaded by the Ethiopian army of 1 million fighting men.
