I begin with a question: Where does your help come from? On whom do you rely for strength? Do you rely on self? That would be self-reliance. Can you ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ as the saying goes? In whom do you put your trust? 
 
The phrase, “In God We Trust” is the official motto of the United States. The phrase was adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1956. The origins of that phrase lie in the time of the Civil War when Union supporters wanted to emphasize their reliance on God. It was printed on US paper currency in the late 1950s after it was approved by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Eisenhower. The law required that the phrase, “In God We Trust” appear on all American currency. 
 
The problem is that it is no longer true. The nation no longer relies on God and in fact great efforts have been made to remove God from all its institutions. I submit that the farther the nation removes itself from God, the weaker it will become. 
 
There is a great spiritual principle at work. This principle applies whether it be a person, a people, or a nation. When you rely on God you are strengthened and increased. When you turn away from God and rely on anything else as a source of strength, you become weaker. This is true for person, a people, or a nation. It’s a question of faith. 
 
That brings us to 2 Chronicle 16. The nation of Israel was at that point divided; ten tribes in the north, two tribes in the south – Judah and Benjamin. The king in the south was King Asa, great-grandson of King Solomon. 
 
No longer was Israel the great nation it had once become. Under King David and Solomon, they were a world power. The nations around them brought tribute in recognition of the strength of a nation that relied on God. 
 
Their downfall began shortly after they reached the pinnacle of their strength. Solomon built a temple to honor God. That temple was one of the great wonders of the world. But then he began to build altars to foreign gods. He had married many foreign women and his heart began to be drawn away from the God of his father toward the gods of his many wives. 
 
The result was predictable. There was a great spiritual principle at work. Solomon no longer relied on God’s help or God’s strength and the nation became weaker. 
 
In 2 Chronicle 16, Solomon’s great-grandson Asa was king of Israel in the south. At first, he did good and right in the sight of the Lord. He commanded Judah to seek the Lord, God of their fathers, and to observe God’s laws and commandments. 
 
The result was good, God blessed them and gave them rest on every side and they prospered. Asa even built an army of more than 500,000 bearing shields and spears. 
 
At one point, an army from Ethiopia came out against him with an army of a million men. When Asa went out to meet them, they drew up in battle formation and Asa called out to the Lord his God for help, saying, “Help us, O Lord our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name, we have come against this great multitude. O Lord, You are our God; let not man prevail against You.” What an amazing prayer! 
 
The Lord routed the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled before them. They carried away great plunder and returned to Jerusalem. 
 
As they returned to Jerusalem, the Spirit of God came upon a prophet who came out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; the Lord is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you…. But as for you, be strong and do not lose courage, for there is great reward for you.” 
 
These words encouraged King Asa and it caused him to gather all Judah and Benjamin to renew their commitment to God, to seek the Lord with all their heart… Even those from the north who resided with them, for many defected to him from Israel in the north when they saw that the Lord his God was with him. So much for the so-called lost ten tribes of Israel. God always has a remnant!

I think it’s important for us to take a moment and assess what’s happening in the world around us. Jesus said to watch for the signs of the times and be ready. There are two parts to that statement; watch and be ready. Watch for the signs of the times and make sure your life is spiritually ready. 
 
 Let’s consider what’s happening in the world. Hurricane Ian is fresh on our minds as it slammed into the Florida coast last week with sustained winds of 155 mph, just shy of Category 5. The catastrophic nature of such events reminds us that the earth itself will be part of the signs to watch for. There will be famines and earthquakes that grow greater in intensity as the time draws near, Jesus said. 
 
 Then you have a great realigning of nations happening in the world today as Russia, China, and Iran are creating the new Axis powers. The situation in Ukraine has become so dire for Russia that the possibility of nuclear war has increased dramatically. Many of you no doubt read the words of our own US President who said this week, “We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.” And then he added, Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin is not joking when he threatens to use nuclear weapons to pursue his invasion of Ukraine. 
 
 To quote the famous folk singer, Bob Dylan, “The times, they are a chang’in.” But they are changing in ways that are deeply concerning. We are seeing prophecy unfolding before our very eyes. 
 
 The world is still reeling from the pandemic that has now touched off economic woes as inflation approaches 10% annually. Supply chain troubles persist. Gasoline is expected to approach $6 a gallon in the near future as Saudi Arabia seems to have aligned itself to support Russia by declaring oil production cutbacks. 
 
These events should get our attention and alert us that we are seeing the beginning of birth pangs Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24 and 25. 
 
 We are living in perilous and dangerous times, but how do we respond? Jesus said to prepare your life by renewing your faith and pursuing revival. 
 
In Matthew 24 Jesus spoke to His disciples when they asked of Him, “Tell us, when will these things be and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 
 
 Jesus then gave the “signs of the times.” In other words, discern and understand the condition of things that will take place in the world that will indicate that the time of the end is drawing near. The condition of things in the world that He lists are being fulfilled today. These are the “beginning of birth pangs,” they are like the buds on the tree that indicates summer draws near. 
 
 There will be wars and rumors of war. There will be plagues and famines and earthquakes that will grow with greater intensity and be closer together as the events of the last days draw nearer. There will be a great falling away, or apostasy, as unrighteousness of worldliness increases and most people's love will grow cold. 
 
 Jesus then spoke of the importance of watching for the return of the Son of Man and being ready. “The coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah, before the flood. They were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage and did not understand until the flood came and took them all away.” 
 
 “The Lord will come like a thief in the night,” Jesus said. “If the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert. For this reason, you too be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.” 
 
 In chapter 25, Jesus gave two parables about the importance of watching and being ready. These parables are significant because they give insight and understanding into what God wants you to do while you are watching and waiting for His return.

If you had to choose, would you rather have God be for you or against you? That seems like such an obvious question to answer. Of course, you would choose that God would be for you. Who would want God to be against them? 
 
 But life’s choices are not always so obvious. Many look at the circumstances before them and respond according to what they see before their eyes without considering God at all. They have relegated God to what they experience at church and have not considered that it is before God “we live and move and have our being,” as Paul wrote in Acts 17. 
 
 However, I submit that if we live and move and have our being before the eyes of God, then God is part of our everyday lives and should be factored into every decision we make. Let’s call it the “God factor.” 
 
 When Solomon collected all those foreign women and built altars to their gods - even in Jerusalem - he had not considered God at all. He would therefore find himself on the wrong side of the God factor and it would not end well for Israel. 
 
After Solomon died, the people of Israel came to his son Rehoboam asking him to lighten the hard service and heavy yoke which Solomon had put upon them. Rehoboam rejected the wise advice of the elders who had served with Solomon and instead followed the advice of his young friends. Their advice was to add to their heavy yoke and to discipline them with scorpions. They thought to teach these people a harsh lesson. 
 
 God was not considered at all. The result? God was against Rehoboam. He would find himself on the wrong side of the God factor and it would not end well. 
 
 The people rebelled against Rehoboam and the nation was divided, ten tribes in the north under their new leader Jeroboam, two tribes in the south under Rehoboam. 
 
 God had told Jeroboam in advance that he would give him ten tribes of Israel and that if he would listen to the commands of the Lord and walk in His ways and do what was right in the sight of the Lord, then God would be with him and would build for him an enduring house as he had for David. 
 
 But Jeroboam rejected these good words and made two golden calves before whom the people in the north could worship instead of worshiping the God of Israel at Jerusalem. 
 
 When Jeroboam made those golden calves, God was not considered at all. He would find himself on the wrong side of the God factor and it would not end well. 
 
 That’s where we pick up our story in 2 Chronicles 13. After Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, his son Abijah became king in his place. 
 
 Shortly after Abijah became king, he gathered an army of 400,000 chosen men and drew up in battle formation against Jeroboam who came out to meet him with 800,000. 
 
 Before the battle was engaged, Abijah called out to Jeroboam and all the soldiers in battle array and gave one of the great speeches in the history of Israel. In this great speech Abijah warned them all that they have found themselves on the wrong side of the God factor and therefore, this would not end well for them. 
 
 Any who find themselves on the wrong side of the God factor will find themselves fighting against God. It’s a great lesson not only for Israel but for everyone today. When it comes to the God factor, I would rather that God be for me. I never want to find myself fighting or kicking against Him. 
 
 Because I have come to discover this great truth, if God is for me, who can be against me? There are great spiritual applications and life lessons from these verses. 
I. Be Governed by God 
 
 Verse 5 – “Do you not know that the Lord God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt?” Abijah said. 
 
 One of the great principles of being on the right side of the God factor is understanding that God has authority. 
 
 God gave the rule over Israel forever to David and his sons. God gave the rule over us to Jesus who is the Son of David. In other words, Jesus has authority and those who abide well under that authority are blessed indeed.
