One of the great themes that runs through the entire Word of God is that God is Emmanuel, God with us. That’s a promise; a promise to cherish, a promise to take hold of; a promise to rely upon, I promise never to take for granted. 
 
 What if God was not Emmanuel? What if His presence did not go with us? To Moses, that was unimaginable. 
 
 But that was the very crisis that Israel came to in Exodus 33. Israel had become such a difficult, stiff-necked, and obstinate people that God finally came to the point where He said to Israel, “Go up to the land which I promised, but go up without Me. If I should go up in your midst for one moment, I would destroy you, for you are and obstinate and stiff-necked people.” 
 
When Moses heard that, it broke his heart. He couldn’t imagine Israel traveling through the desert without the presence of God. So Moses interceded for Israel and even said, “If Your presence does not go with us, then do not lead us up from this place.” In other words, Moses was saying, “Without you, God, I don’t want to go anywhere.” What great life lessons there are in the story. 
 
One of the keys to understanding Exodus 33 is that it immediately follows chapter 32. God called Moses to reside in His presence on Mount Sinai 40 days. God gave Moses the Law and commandments, the way of greatest blessing. He was also describing to Moses how to build the tabernacle, the place where His glory would dwell. 
 
 The people of Israel thought Moses had been gone too long on the mountain, they didn’t know what had become of him. They insisted Aaron make a god to go before them. They hadn’t heard anything from Jehovah for forty days and decided they needed another god; any god would do, apparently. 
 
 So Aaron told them to tear off the gold rings which were in their ears and from the gold he fashioned a golden calf. Then they, and we don’t know for certain who they are, said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 
 
 Interesting use of the plural in the phrase “these are your gods.” There’s just one calf there. Then, making this story even more intriguing, Aaron built an altar before it – obviously for the purpose of worship – and made a proclamation, saying, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to Jehovah.” 
 
 Now the phrase ‘these are your gods’ comes into focus. They weren’t trying to cast off Jehovah, they were adding the golden calf. You can take the people out of Egypt, but it’s hard to get Egypt out of the people. The Egyptian god, Apis, was a sacred bull worshiped in the Memphis region. He was the son of Hathor, mother of the sun god Ra, the symbolic mother of the pharaohs. He was the god of fertility and represented the strength and vitality of the Pharaoh. 
 
 They wanted Jehovah, but they also wanted the calf, made of gold, the god of fertility and virility and power. There is a great lesson in this story. You can’t have both. But many try, and you can be sure, God will not be pleased with it. 
 
They held a great feast and began to dance before it in a lewd way. When Moses and Joshua came down from the mountain, Joshua said, “There is the sound of war in the camp.” Moses replied, “That is not the sound of war - of triumph or defeat - the sound of singing is what I hear.” 
 
 Moses then became angry and threw down the tablets of the Law which God had given him, ground the golden calf into powder and made the people drink it. Then, he called out, “Whoever is for Jehovah, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves to Moses. He told them to strap on swords and purge the camp. 
 
 Then we come to chapter 33. God told Moses to move the people from that place and go toward the land He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. There are life lessons and spiritual applications out of the story.

If you were to name people who have lived an effective life, who would you name? In the Christian world, I think many people would say Billy Graham, or Chuck Smith, or Greg Laurie, Luis Palau or perhaps James Dobson. Going back a bit further, perhaps Corrie Ten Boom or Charles Spurgeon. 
 
 But there are many others who lived the effective life you probably have never heard of. They are famous in heaven, however. 
 
 When you think of the most effective people in the Bible, who comes to mind? Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Daniel, Isaiah, Elijah and Elisha? But what about those who aren’t so famous? Have you heard of Bezalel and Oholiab? You will hear of them today. Without question they lived the effective life. But what makes a life effective? 
 
 First, there is a distinction between the world’s definition and God’s definition of an effective life. God’s definition of an effective life comes from a spiritual perspective. God made us with a soul and spirit and an effective life comes from spiritual bearing. 
 
 To be effective means to accomplish a goal or purpose. To be spiritually effective you must fulfill God’s purpose. He wants your life to have meaning and purpose, to have value, to live for that which is higher and greater than yourself; to have spiritual significance and to make an impact on the people around you. An effective life is a fulfilling life because you are fulfilling God’s purpose. 
 
 In these verses today, you see those principles which God gives to those who seek to live the effective life and fulfill God’s purpose. 
 
 When God met Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him not only laws and commandments, He also gave instructions for building the tabernacle, the place where God’s presence, His Shekinah glory, would be seen. God was fulfilling His promise that His presence would go with them as He brought them to the land He promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 
 
 God gave Moses detailed instructions about how the tabernacle was to be built. Every aspect of the tabernacle is a shadow of the throne of God in heaven itself and a symbol of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who makes relationship with God possible. 
 
 In these verses today, God called the men He desired to use in the craftsmanship of the tabernacle, and He called them by name. These are Bezalel and Oholiab; not famous in the annals of biblical history, but effective in fulfilling God’s purpose and examples to everyone who seeks to live the effective spiritual life and fulfill God’s purpose. 
 
I. God Calls You to His Purpose 
 
 God specifically called Bezalel and Oholiab by name for the purpose to which he had called them. 
 
 Does God call you as well? Absolutely. And He calls you by name… 
 
Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 
 
A. God calls you to relationship first 
 
 What does the word ‘calling’ mean? Literally, it means to call someone’s name to get their attention. 
Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” 
 God has a calling and gives purpose to your life, but God calls you to relationship with Him first. 
 When David was a young man, God called him and anointed him to become the next king of Israel. But long before that, David had a relationship to God. 
Illus - When David was just a simple shepherd, writing Psalms and singing to the Lord and playing on his harp, did he have it in his mind that one day he would be famous? Did he say to himself, “One day these psalms will be read all of the world, I should get a publisher.” The reason David wrote the Psalms was to honor and worship on his harp because of his heart for God. 
God called him to relationship before he called him to be king. The same is true for you and me.

1. Fear. We can all relate to fear. 
2. Whether it’s COVID-19 or some new variant, wars or rumors of war, inflation or recession, inflated fuel prices or empty grocery store shelves, we can all relate to fear. 
3. Whether it’s sharing the Gospel with a non-Christian or standing up for what is true when it’s unpopular to do so, we can all relate to fear. 
4. Or on a more personal level, whether it’s spiders or snakes, never getting married or getting divorced, finding a job or losing your job, failing health or the death of a loved one, the relative who won’t talk to you or an in-law who still hasn’t gone home after their Christmas visit; again, we can all relate to fear. 
5. We might not have the same fears or go through the same trials, but all of us have experienced fear, especially when trials come; when our “What ifs” or “Worst case scenarios” become a reality. 
6. Tonight, we are going to study a passage that is familiar to many, if not all of us – the epic battle between David and Goliath. 
7. But we’re not going to study David’s actual defeat of Goliath. 
8. Rather, we’re going to look at the epic battle before the battle to discover some of the enemy’s tactics as well as some critical principles from God’s Word to help us live victoriously When Trials Come. 
 
1 Samuel 17:1-11, 16 
 
Context 
1. By the time we come to 1 Samuel 17, it’s important to note that Israel’s first king, Saul, had been rejected by God because he had disobeyed God’s command when he failed to completely destroy the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15). 
2. So, God had found someone to replace Saul, a man after His own heart, a young shepherd from Bethlehem by the name of David. 
3. In fact, at this point, the prophet Samuel had already anointed David as king (1 Samuel 16:13), but David did not begin to reign until much later (2 Samuel 2). 
4. God allowed Saul to reign as king to reveal that: 
a. Saul was disqualified and rejected as king. 
b. David was qualified and anointed to be the next king. 
c. In many ways, this trial with the Philistines was God’s way of introducing David to Israel, a divine message that God’s favor was resting upon their next king, David. 
 
Transition – With this context in mind, the first biblical principle to help us live victoriously when trials come is. . . 
 
I. We Must Stand Our Ground (1-3) 
 
• Unfortunately, many Christians give up ground when trials come; perhaps you can relate. 
• But when trials come, that is the time when we must stand our ground. 
 
A. Satan is always trying to steal ground from us (1) 
1. Notice where the Philistines set up camp. 
a. The Philistines set up camp in a town called Socoh. (1) 
b. Where was Socoh located? In Judah. 
 c. Who gave Socoh to Judah? God. 
 
Joshua 15:20-21, 35, This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Judah according to their families. Now the cities at the extremity of the tribe of the sons of Judah were. . . Socoh and Azekah 
 
2. When the Philistine set up camp in Socoh they were declaring to Israel that Socoh now belonged to the Philistines. 
3. At first glance one might ask, “Socoh was just a border town. Why did it matter?” 
4. It mattered because strong border towns are essential for the stability of any nation. 
5. If a country is unable to protect its borders, then it won’t be long before its capital is vulnerable as well. 
 
APPL – Spiritually speaking, “stealing ground” from God’s people is a common tactic of the enemy. 
 
John 10:10a, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy 
 
• The enemy will look for vulnerable areas first. 
• Then, little by little, the enemy will take and occupy as much ground as each Christian is willing to give up. 
• The enemy seeks to steal our vision to destroy our hopes and dreams. 
• The enemy also seeks to steal our testimony and destroy our witness. 
 
ILLUS – Do nations, companies, or relationships fail overnight?

One of the greatest themes that runs through the entire bible is that God wants to be Emmanuel, ‘God with us.’ You can see this from Genesis through Revelation. 
 
 Another theme that runs through the bible is that as Emmanuel, God wants to be all that He is in our lives. In other words, all that God is, He wants to be for you when He walks with you on the journey of this life. That changes everything. 
 
 All that God is, He is for you, and He has given the nature of His character through H’s is name. There are many names God uses to describe Himself, but perhaps the greatest of all is when He told Moses that His name was YWHW. It means, “I am.” Actually, it means even more than that, it means. “All that I am I am to you.” It’s personal, it’s relational, and when you take hold of the promises contained in His name it will change your life. 
 
Here’s the back story; when Jacob and his sons went to Egypt, there were 70 persons among them. God preserved them as a nation there in Egypt and provided for them during a severe seven-year famine. 
 
 When you come to the book of Exodus, however, it’s 400 years later. They have grown from 70 to more than 2 million people. The favor which Pharaoh had shown when they first arrived in Egypt did not last. As other Pharaohs came to power, they became concerned because Israel had grown so great in number. In fear, Pharaoh gave orders to enslave the Israelites and to make life difficult and harsh for them. But the more Israel suffered the more they grew in number. 
 
 God chose Moses to deliver the nation from the bondage of their slavery. Moses was a miracle baby. Pharaoh gave orders that every son who was born was to be thrown into the Nile, but Moses’ parents hid him in a wicker basket and set him amongst the reeds of the Nile River. They entrusted Moses to the mercy of God. 
 
Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby Moses in the basket and decided to raise him as her own. Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s home with all the privilege and accoutrements of wealth and status. When Moses had grown to be a man, he saw the hard labor and suffering of the Hebrews, and it troubled him. 
 
One day he saw an Egyptian slave master beating a Hebrew. He looked this way and that, and when he saw no one, he struck down the Egyptian, killed him, and hid him in the sand. 
 
But the matter became known and when Pharaoh heard of it, he tried to kill Moses, so Moses fled into the desert and came to the land of Midian. There he became a shepherd and stayed in the desert 40 years. 
 
In Exodus 3, Moses had an encounter with God, but God had been working on him for more than forty years. It is here that we come to understand who God is and who God desires to be in our lives.

There are certain decisions in life that become hinge points on which the entirety of life is turned. You and I can look back on our lives and consider key decisions we made that became key hinge points as well. Your life turned on the decisions you made. 
 
 Other decisions are so important that not only are they hinge points for your life, not only do they change the course of your own life, but they impact others as well. 
 
 This is what happened to David in 1 Chronicles 21. David made a critical error of judgment. It was a decision that would impact the whole of the nation of Israel. It was a failure of epic proportions. But what followed, how David responded, changed the course of the history of the entire world. In fact, David’s decisions and the course of his life impacts the world today and has everything to do with the prophetic future and the end of the age! 
 
 In other words, this is not just about David’s failure, it’s about how he responded to that failure. And it’s a story of how God transforms failure into victory and into faith. 
 
 People fail. It’s part of human nature. It’s what you do next that determines the course. But it’s also about what God does next. You must factor in how God responds to failure and how God is able to transform failure into victory. 
 
The back story is this; at some point in David's life, after he had been king of Israel for many years and there was peace all around, he decided he wanted to number the people of Israel. In other words, he wanted a census to be taken. No specific reason was given for David's desire to count the people, but when you study the chapter, the reasons become clear. 
 
Counting the people, taking a census itself was not wrong if it was necessary and needful. For example, in the book of Exodus, God gave instruction for the taking of a census where everyone 20 years old and above was counted for the purpose of supporting the tabernacle, the house of the Lord. Each person would give a half shekel. The rich would not give more, the poor would not give less. 
 
A census could also be taken if the nation was preparing for war. The commander would need to know the strength of his forces, to assess his ability to confront the enemy. 
 
Luke 14:31, “What king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, would not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?” 
 
That was not the case with David. There was peace all around, the nations around them had been subdued. If David’s men set out for the purpose of counting those who could fight, it must mean only one thing – David was preparing for war. The people would’ve been set on edge. War strikes fear in the heart of a nation. 
 
But David wasn’t preparing for war. No foreign armies had been able to defeat Israel with David as their king and commander. He was counting the people for all the wrong reasons. There can be only one conclusion, David wanted to know how great he had become, how great Israel had become with him as king. 
 
Joab, the commander of the army of Israel, tried to persuade David not to take the census, and with very strong words. In other words, Joab, who most assuredly was not a saint, knew that taking this census was wrong. Other commanders of the army also tried to convince David not to do this thing. 
 
But David would not relent. He went against all counsel and persisted. He wanted this census taken and he would not change his mind. 
 
Just how successful had David become? Just how powerful were David's forces? In other words, how powerful is David? There was only one way to know; take a census and number those who drew the sword. This wasn’t about how great God was, this was about how great David was. 
This is a failure of epic proportions. But great things come out of this story. Yes, David will come to his senses. There will be one final revival in David’s heart. There are many life lessons that come to us in the story. It’s about how God transforms failure into victory.

Have you ever had the thought in your mind that God has done so much for you that you want to do something for Him? Have you ever had the idea that you can bless God? It’s a beautiful thought. If you step back and consider all that God has done; it’s nothing short of amazing. As for me, I can say beyond question that I have been truly blessed. God’s hand has been clearly seen and it has been the hand of tremendous blessing. 
 
 What can you do? What can you say? What can you offer to God that in any way compares to what He has done for you? A heart that sees all that God has done wants to do something! 
 
 The question, then, is how God responds to those who want to bless Him. You’re not wanting to do anything for God in the hope of getting anything in return, you’re just so thankful for all that God has done that you simply want to bless Him as an expression of a simple, thankful heart. 
 
How does God respond to that? 
 
 This is the heart of David in 1 Chronicles 17. God anointed him to be the future king of Israel when he was only in his teens. He took him from being a simple shepherd to king of Israel! God delivered David from all his distresses, He cut off all his enemies from before him. 
 
King Saul had relentlessly pursued David for years. Out of insecurity and fear Saul pursued David to take his life, desperately trying to hold on to that which God had removed from him. God had removed the kingdom from Saul to give it to David, a man after His own heart. 
 
 God was with David in every battle. God gave him peace on every side. God gave him the city of Jerusalem, also called the city of David, to establish his throne and to reign over the nation of Israel. 
 
 The king of Tyre, just to the north, along the Mediterranean coast, saw that the favor of God was on his life. He sent David massive cedars from Lebanon and stonemasons and craftsmen to build a house for David. It was then that David realized that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that God had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people. 
 
 God had done all this for David and David wanted to do something for God. You’ve got to love David’s heart. And God did love David; he was a man after His own heart. 
 
 Here’s what’s amazing about the story; David saw the ark of God sitting within tent curtains and said to himself, “God has done so much for me, I want to build a house for Him.” 
 
 God responded to David through the prophet Nathan, “You want to build a house for me? The Lord declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you. And he will make your name great like the names of the great men who are on the earth. And I will establish your throne forever. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever, and your throne shall be established forever!” 
 
 How beautiful is this? God does amazing things for David; then David, out of a heart of worship and gratitude wants to do something for God; and God respond with an amazing promise, “I will do something even greater for you.” 
 
 The fulfillment of that promise is found in Jesus. He is called the Son of David and it is He who will sit on the throne in Jerusalem ruling and reigning the nations of the earth for a thousand years. 
 
I. Never Forget What God has Done 
 
 David realized that he had been greatly blessed by God's hand and he wanted to do something great for God as a response. 
 
 This is what separates David from others. Saul never had such a thought, yet he was anointed king over Israel. 
 
 This should be our heart for God as well. When you realize how much God has done for you, it should cause you to want to do something to say thank you, to be grateful… 
 
Illus - I love the lyrics of the worship song Goodness of God. “I love you, Lord. For Your mercy never fails me. All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands. From the moment that I wake up, until I lay my head, I will sing of the goodness of God.

1 and 2 Chronicles are books often avoided when people study the Bible. Admittedly, a book that begins with 9 chapters of genealogies doesn’t exactly shout, “read me, read me! I will inspire your faith!” But these are powerful books, written with great purpose, meant to inspire and strengthen faith. 
 
 The exacting detail of these genealogies should cause us to appreciate the years of research and effort involved. The genealogies have a purpose, the exacting detail also has a purpose. He wants to bring his Jewish readers back to their faith, to inspire revival, to remind them that God gave them a rich heritage. God gave them that land and God called them to dwell in that land as the people of God, a people of faith. 
 
 He began the genealogies with Adam, reminded them of Noah and the line through whom was born Abraham, the father of faith. He reminded them of Isaac and Ishmael, sons of Abraham and brothers of animosity, the cause of many tensions and conflicts in the world today. 
 
 He reminded them of Jacob and Esau, brothers born as twins, yet only one chosen to receive the promises of God. He reminded them of the 12 sons of Israel who would become the 12 tribes who would inherit the land. Of the 12 sons of Israel, only one would become the head, for the Messiah would be called the lion from the tribe of Judah. 
 
 The first of the lions of the tribe of Judah would be David. All other kings would be compared to him. This becomes one of the main themes of the book, tracing the line and the history of the Messiah. 
 
 His aim was to strengthen their claim to that land and to strengthen their hope as they await the Messiah who will one day come and rule and reign again as the lion from the tribe of Judah. They have a rightful claim, and they will one day have a king to rule and reign in Jerusalem again. 
 
 This book was written after the destruction of Jerusalem and after their exile in Babylon those 70 years. They returned to rebuild and restore the city and the temple, but the nation was weak and there was no king. He wrote this book to strengthen their rightful claim to the land, to strengthen the faith of the nation, and to restore their hope in the coming Messiah. 
 
Even today Israel holds on to that hope. Many are longing and hoping and waiting for the Messiah who will come and who will rule and reign again in Jerusalem. By the miraculous, intervening hand of God they are once more living in the land God promised, but they are still waiting for their Messiah. 1 and 2 Chronicles lays the foundation for that hope. 
 
 After weaving their history through 9 chapters of genealogies, he lays the foundation for their messianic hope by recounting the story of David. God took him as a simple, humble shepherd and made him a great leader, a lion. 
 
 The transformation of David is a picture of what God can do with simple faith. God still, even today, takes those who are humble and simple, with simple faith, and transforms them into those who make a difference in their generation, who make an impact in the world because of their heart for God. 
 
 The story of David, however, is also a story of those mighty men around him. What God did in David inspired them to believe what God can do with them as well. This is a story of David’s mighty men, transformed from a ragtag group of outcasts and nobodies into men of renown, men who had the face like a lion and the heart of David. 
 
You can learn a lot from great men and women of faith. Perhaps the greatest lesson is this; there is no such thing as great men and women of faith who didn’t do something with their faith. 
 
In other words, their faith was active, it was alive. It moved them to move, to act, to do, to accomplish. 
 
You see that in Hebrews 11, that famous chapter we call the “Hall of Faith.” Great men and women who took their faith and did something with it, something for the glory of God… 
 
By faith, Enoch walked with God – and was pleasing to God. 
By faith, Noah prepared an ark for the salvation of his household. 
By faith, Abraham obeyed God and went out, not knowing where he was going. 
By faith, Moses chose rather to endure ill treatment with the people of God than enjoy the passing pleasures of sin. 
By faith, Rahab the harlot welcomed the spies in peace.
